gosh…
Online
marketers are a VAIN bunch!
What am I talking
about?
Their
website headers, book covers, logos, and signature…everything is plastered with
an ugly mugshot of “them’s truly”.
I can tell you’re
feeling guilty right now, because I have X-RAY vision through your computer. (Stop
picking your nose!)
And you
have a distinctly sheepish look on your face. 🙂
Look…
Your
picture serves no purpose whatsoever.
It can even
hurt your marketing!
Today I spent
the day redesigning a client’s logo.
Like I told
you before, I’m no designer. I know just enough photoshop to be dangerous to
myself.
Luckily, for
selling online, you don’t need design as much as you need Cognitive Psychology
(aka “the science of ATTENTION”).
I noticed the
original design wasted “250 pixels” of vertical screen space to say absolutely
farking nothing.
People
access the internet now from a variety of devices.
Devices
that keep getting smaller.
And you’ve got
ONE chance to get your visitor’s attention and say something worth scrolling for…
…Before
they hit the “back” button and go elsewhere.
So here’s
the head-scratcher:
You have NO
IDEA how high your visitor’s screen is.
They might be able to see the top 100
pixels or the top 6,000 without scrolling. No way to
know.
All you
know is, information you place HIGHEST on your site will be seen by 100% of
visitors. And information
placed lowest will be seen by less than 1% of visitors.
Ask
yourself, is your mugshot honestly the best use of that uuuuuber valuable screen
real-estate?
Unless
you’re a famous Hollywood celebrity, your photo is meaningless.
It only makes
you look that much more of a clown.
If your visitor doesn’t recognize you, they figured out your gambit: You don’t know nothin’. Not enough to be famous anyway.
So, like I said,
I redesigned the client’s logo to be smaller.
Not only
that, but I used a colour scheme that made it “blend in” so it will be perceived
as part of the background and not take away the visitor’s attention from where I
REALLY wanted them to look.
At the “sign
up” box!
And since
we’re talking about logos…
Let me just
say, any designer will tell you that photos make for the WORST possible logos.
They are
expensive to print.
They don’t
scale up or down nicely.
And they look
unprofessional in every context.
