Why YouTube is the toilet of marketing training

i often come across beginners in forums who give bad advice to slightly newer beginners.

Like this gem:

   “don’t waste money on online marketing courses because you can find pretty much everything for free on YouTube.”

in my experience, YouTube’s great for learning any topic under the sun. EXCEPT marketing.

and you may think me biased because i happen to have an online course to sell…but in an industry where it’s rare to buy a useful program, how can you expect free to be better?

the “training” videos on YouTube are usually someone’s lazy attempt to convince you they’re an authority so they can either sell you an affiliate course they didn’t make and know little about, or so they can generate ad revenue by creating content, without taking the time to gain any depth of knowledge or mastery.

case in point…

a video i saw claimed to teach how to “correctly” setup a Google Ads campaign.

the narrator seemed to be working off a list of supposed “best practices” invented by the internet’s forgotten gooroos.

dumb ideas like having an Adgroup for every keyword you’re targeting–a popular idea in dumbass marketer circles, known by the sexy code-name of “SKAG”.

Google named them “Ad__GROUPS__” for a reason…

…they group your targeting.

and in English, a GROUP usually implies having more than one item with something in common. so what on earth is a Single Keyword Ad “Group” (SKAG)?

i wish i could tell you this video was a one-off, created by an amateur, and that you’ll find OTHER videos of better quality. but the entire industry seems to be in agreement about the ridiculous ideas he was sharing.

in truth, the few people getting results with their advertising are not wasting their time making free click-bait videos to generate ad revenue.

they’re the ones placing ads on top of those shyt YouTube videos, SELLING stuff, and making money for themselves or their clients by ACTUALLY advertising with Google.

and if their knowledge has ANY value at all, they’d be using it or selling it…under no circumstances would they be giving it away for free.

many more dumb ideas in the video centered around increasing clicks, as if clicks are synonymous with sales conversions.

the entire industry is obsessed with clicks.

yet i’ve never worked for a single real client who cheered for lots of clicks while losing money.

in reality, combining high clickthru with poor conversion means you end up with a large advertising bill, an ad budget that will never be replenished, and a big giant shaft up your rear.

i certainly don’t advertise to lose.
