Said Google, in 2020:
“Users are demanding greater privacy–including transparency, choice, and control over how their data is used–and it’s clear the web ecosystem needs to evolve to meet these increasing demands.”
By next year, almost all browsers including Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, will phase out or entirely disallow third-party cookies.
Why is this a big deal?
Honestly, for us marketers, it’s not. We should be cheering!
What Google is suggesting as a replacement, people don’t realise this, but it will merely give them MORE accurate information about users. Allowing us advertisers access to better targeting options.
So i’m not worried. Neither should you be.
But what’s interesting to me about this bit of news, is that the layman internet user has grown savvy. They’re much more concerned about their privacy in their preferences, their buying habits, their conversations, and their data.
Which, honestly, in most cases is BULLSHIT data that isn’t even worth worrying about protecting (relatively speaking). I’d be more concerned about what governments and hackers might intercept and record.
As a business owner though, i’m very much concerned about my data.
Not just in terms of its privacy, but also in terms of its storage and ownership. And if you know what’s good for you, you should be very concerned too.
If you’re actually running an online business right now, and you’re not just dabbling and fucking about, you rely HEAVILY on 3rd party services. Starting from web hosting providers, to content distribution platforms, to email services, transaction gateways, automation tools, page builders, shopping carts, affiliate management systems…
The fact that your business is connected with these services means they own and control a slice of your business.
Moreover, you are building your prospective customers’ information, your customer information, your content, your products, and lots of other data into their platforms. Meaning, you can’t separate yourself from them without destroying your business in the process.
Dude, if you’re gonna marry something as precious as your business with someone else’s business, that should be a SERIOUSLY well studied decision.
You don’t do it with just anyone.
And you don’t do it without a REALLY good reason.
The problem is, for most of us, when we make these choices, it’s early in our online business career. So we don’t actually realise how critical that decision is. How much it will affect our future. And how difficult it will be to untangle ourselves from that relationship, down the line, should we need to.
Until it’s too late.
And there’s plenty of reasons that might motivate you to untangle. For one, they could at ANY time, pull the rug from under you.
Don’t think you’re gonna be safe because you’re spending lots of money with them. As weird as it sounds, policy violations are the most common reason that even big businesses get kicked off. Legal problems for these service providers can be far more costly than losing a client who puts them at risk.
That’s just one example.
I’m not sensationalizing this. It’s a reality i’ve lived through and know others who did too. They went from making millions to absolute bankruptcy and divorce in mere months.
You can ignore my advice and learn it the hard way, when it’s too late.
Or you can learn from my two decades of experience, blood, sweat, and tears, and do something about it today.
It’s much easier than you can imagine to be independent of the services you use. And it’s a lot cheaper too. Especially when you have someone as techy as i am walking you through all the steps.
We’re doing a live training session 9 days from now. Yes, it’s getting tight!
The Business Command Center is a 90 minute live training in which i take you step by step, while you follow along, on how to setup all the technology for your business, from scratch. Completely owned by you, with a MINIMAL reliance on external services.
We still need a few REALLY important ones (eg, transaction processors). But i’ve managed to eliminate almost all of them. Your data lives with YOU and only you control it.
