You know what?
Marketers can only belong to one of two groups:
– Those who are good at traffic
– and those who are good at sales.
People who are good at traffic are either under-funded or unable to get a ROI on their ad spending.
Whereas people who are good at sales are able to make a lot of money even from the tiniest lists of 100 people or more! But their trouble is that they’re CONSTANTLY looking for new traffic sources with little luck.
In the end, both groups NEED each other.
For the longest time, I was part of the first group.
I was GREAT at traffic, but had no clue how to sell to the leads I generated. This became a problem very quickly because no matter how much I spent on traffic, and no matter how many leads I generated, I couldn’t get a return on my ad spending and quickly had to shut off very successful lead campaigns.
So I spent the early part of my career jumping from one client or partner to the next.
Like my first ever client. They had a great funnel that was converting well, many upsells, one-time-offers, and launches.
But their affiliates weren’t providing enough traffic for them.
After months of producing LOTS of traffic and leads to myself with only the TINIEST of returns, I was given an unlimited budget and told to bring as much traffic as I could and they’d convert it.
That was the happiest partnership of my life.
Within two months, I was generating as much as 40 sales a day, and earning 5 figures a month!
Later, I partnered up with several marketers to create products and launches. People who were really good at the sales process but awful at traffic.
Although we made MILLLLLIONS, This turned very quickly into a disaster. I ended up in unsavory company with awful deals.
I was always at their mercy. If they got complacent, my income stopped.
Now, I fixed this problem for myself (more on that in a second), but only after being shat on by every sales Gooroo online.
For instance, I was once brought on to manage traffic for a business selling to fatties.
After delivering traffic for the partner’s offer and generating some great financial returns, the partner decided to change sales strategy in such a way that killed our profit margins.
Rather than fix the problem by adding new upsell products, the partner decided to dissolve the deal instead because there was no ROI.
Now the partner insisted to hold on to the rights to the product, the brand, and the mailing list…which was their share of the work and money.
There was no financial value to these things since at the time of dissolution, the business was LOSING money.
But what we need to remember is that, at a later date, the sales guys could just as easily resurrect the project with another traffic source or traffic partner, add an upsell or two, and the money flows again for them.
On the other hand, I could just as easily hold onto the traffic campaign like they held onto their work…but I can do nothing productive with it at a later date.
There’s no way to plug the campaign into another sales process. After all, traffic has to be specific to the product being sold…and that’s not available to you anymore.
Now this is not as big a problem as it used to be for me, because I have a lot of other income sources and this was a negligible source of income by comparison.
But affiliates…traffic people whose income relies SOLELY on their traffic skills…they’re screwed.
Affiliates and network marketers don’t own the product or sales process.
If the partner company decides to change the compensation structure or replace their products with others that have smaller margins…well, you’re screwed.
The truth is that traffic people depend on sales people.
And sales people depend on traffic people.
Except that sales people always have the upper-hand.
So what’s the solution?
Do what I did:
#1 – own the sales process and the product. Don’t let anyone else control it but you.
#2 – learn to sell your own products.
#3 – (optional) outsource traffic. There’s always someone else out there who can do a “good enough” or better job than you – and all they want is a good funnel to use their skills profitably with while you focus on the sales and product.
