I know it’s a bit soon for another Wendy’s story…
But this, I couldn’t resist.
It was noon, on a lovely winter’s day.
The clouds in the sky dulled the heat of the dessert sun.
We cruised the streets with the windows down. The cool air blew
through our hair–a rare luxury in a place where your whole life is air-conditioned,
from home, to car, to office, to shop.
I turned to Gremlin in the passenger seat, and said, “Shall
we grab a cold drink?”
“Sure,” he responded. “A drink sounds good right about now.”
As we made our way to the local mall, we chatted about how we can make the world a better place.
Upon arrival, the cooking smells in the food-court
invited us in.
“What do you want to have?” I asked.
“Wendy’s. Strawberry shake,” said Gremlin.
I was keen on something more “slushy”. So I looked around
and spotted Baskin Robbins.
“I’ll order from there. You grab your shake and i’ll meet you at
the table,” said I.
When we sat down, we agreed to share a Wendy’s Mushroom
& Beef melt… both of us had late lunch plans and we didn’t plan to get full.
I took the first few bites then passed it on.
Gremlin took a couple more bites while we continued our conversation.
Suddenly, Gremlin bent down, choked, and put his hand to his
“Are you ok?” I asked in concern.
He struggled a little more but did not answer. It appeared he
was removing something from his teeth.
But what was it?
Finally, Gremlin pulled the thing from his mouth and put it
on the table in front of us.
“What the fugk is that!?” I asked in disgust.
“A piece of friggin metal! In the meat!” he sputtered in
A closer look revealed it was a small, round, metal object…that
closely resembled a screw-WASHER.
IN THE MEAT!!!
This whole horrid affair got me thinking…
One of the worst things to happen to business is Social
Media. While many marketers think it’s an effective and cheap way to spread the
good word about your business..
…the power of “word of mouth” and all…
But i disagree.
I think social media is better at killing business than
You’ve heard the expression, “Good news travels fast. Bad
news travels FASTER.”
A well-known statistic in the restaurant industry is that
when someone has a GOOD experience, 1/3 will post a review several hours later.
While a second 1/3 will post a BAD experience IMMEDIATELY.
Not only that, but pre-internet, when someone had a bad
experience, they USED to tell 10 people.
Now, with social media, they will reach millions before they even leave the premises.
Indeed, the first thing Gremlin did, before taking the “washer”
back to the manager, was to take a photo and post it to Instagram and Facebook.
And here I am posting this story to my huge subscriber base.
It hasn’t been 24-hours and thousands upon thousands of
people now know that Wendy’s has metal in their burgers.
How many new customers did they acquire with their social
presence in that time?
Maybe it’s not a big deal to Wendy’s…
But imagine how quickly your little start-up business can be
harmed by social media if you “screw up” just ONE TIME (no pun intended :).
This is not to say that we should IGNORE social media.
Quite the opposite.
But you can’t rely on it completely to spread the good word
about your business. It’s more likely to spread the bad word than anything
Which is why I favour search-based traffic when I want to
spread the “good word”.
It offers us a MUCH quicker way to acquire new customers
than social media can. (Remember, good word travels SLOW.)
And search-traffic is FASTER at spreading the good word.
Not only that, but with search-based traffic, you have complete
control over the MESSAGE that gets spread.
That’s a big deal.
On social media you have NO control over the message.
So even if someone has something GOOD to say about you,
there’s a good chance it won’t be good enough to attract new customers.
With search, you determine the best message you want spread.
That’s why I’ve always taught search-traffic. And if you
want to learn to get traffic by spreading a message that YOU control, my
Traffic KickStart is an excellent training that teaches you to do that.
It’s fast, effective, and puts you in control.
