You know what’s
People in our industry
dream about “firing their boss” and being their own boss. They actually think
they’ll be liberated the day they accomplish it.
Because when you’re in
business you DO have a boss – and he’s a real dick.
I’m not talking about
you. I’m sure you’re a nice boss and you’re really understanding and lenient
and you’re not too demanding on yourself.
But there’s another
They’re called your CUSTOMERS.
Customers are a royal
pain in the arse. No offence intended if you are already one of my customers.
It’s just that customers
are super-demanding and they expect on-time, professional-grade perfection.
Case in point,
recently one of our clients wrote upset with the ads we wrote for him because
they “mis-spelled” his niche’s name. It was NOT an actual misspelling, but a
misunderstanding of the proper capitalization.
While this may sound
like not a big deal, IT IS.
I yelled at my ad writers for getting it wrong.
Because the customer is entitled to demand perfection. They can take their
business else-where and their money.
They’re paying for professionalism
and they should get it.
And it doesn’t matter
if you sell tangible products, ebooks, coaching, memberships, or systems. You
always answer to customer-bosses. They expect what they will.
Customers can be
unreasonable bosses too.
Another example from the

products offered additional “private tutoring” for those who needed extra
attention outside the classroom. And also services where we do the assignments
on their behalf.
They had an extra cost, of course.
But instead of appreciating
the availability of extra services added for their convenience, we were accused of using it as a “funded
proposal” to “upsell” stuff. This, in our industry, is jargon for “selling a

The program is legitimate and I’m up at 3am giving content-filled classes. But
it didn’t stop some people from cancelling their accounts with the excuse they expected
this to be covered with their tiny membership fee.
Yet, my “bosses” expected
While you have choice
to tell your boss to stick it up their bum and you’re not doing what they ask…they
also have the choice to unreasonably fire you.
And you don’t have any
rights like in the workplace.
Merchant accounts and
billing services rarely side with the merchant. If someone is going to lose
money, they figure the merchant can afford the loss. So customers get to lie
and cheat and steal and we have to treat it as the “cost of doing business
The only comfort you can
is that even if one customer decides to fire you,
you have other “bosses” to take his or her place and keep paying you for work.
from that, what you’re asking for is to move from one unreasonable boss to
tens, hundreds, or even thousands of new bosses.
…and you waive all the
work-place rights you currently enjoy.
So if you still think
they’re better than the boss at your job, great.
But there’s an
important case for keeping the ole job-boss around while you transition into a

So the only boss
paying you is the one at the ole job; keep em around a while. Otherwise, where will you get the money to fund launching
