My friend got married last night.
missed the ceremony, beautiful reception though.
the room was packed full of old college friends who have all moved from New Zealand to live and work in Dubai.
Most of them computer scientists and software engineers – was kinda funny how so many nerds in one room had attracted all the most beautiful women as wives haha.
a conversation i had with a couple of the lads got me thinking…
it’s a myth that you can do it all lone-ranger style.
every business destined for success BEGINS by identifying the skills it needs to GO and then acquires them. you can’t learn everything fast enough to grow a business in time to pay the bills…
unless you find someone who is willing to trade skills with money or skills with complimentary skills.
anyway, let me continue..
as we caught up on what’s good with everyone, i mentioned to a couple of lads that i’m getting a standing desk custom built at home. beautiful invention, btw. solved like 80% of my back, head, and neck pains overnight.
the minute i brought up back pain, the guys chimed in with complaints about their declining health (they’re all in late 20’s and early 30’s!)
Their backs are RAPED at work every day tho. i mean, you can imagine the life of a programmer, even mid- and upper- level management are desk-jockies seated for the majority of the day.
suddenly i found myself feeling EXTREMELY grateful.
i mean, at least when i screw my back working, it’s while working for myself. these guys are killing their bodies to make someone else rich.
the truth is, despite the occasional back pain (that i’ve made lots of progress in healing anyway), i have it pretty sweet.
i live in a country that i chose, where i don’t depend on its economy or any other for that matter. and i get to have a TRULY work from home business…i don’t have an office and employees sitting in it that i have to supervise…
yet i have real live employees. LOTS OF THEM.
all over the world too.
now don’t get me wrong, i have an honest to goodness virtual office that i check into and out of every day..and i still have to manage people…except i do it from the comfort of my home.
my virtual office is complete with all social aspects of a real office, where i’m able to keep track of everyone, where everyone is competitive and motivated…and where everyone has to “come” to work in their PJs is ok (haha funny point we have a dress code in our Employee Handbook but it’s just for virtual video appearances).
in fact, having my office setup this way is not only convenient, but it also keeps my running costs down significantly which means i can pass on those savings to customers – i don’t need to make a milllion bucks just to break even.
aside from a broadband connection + two PCs i run…i really don’t have any operating overheads.
why do i tell you all this?
even though you might be still a way off from being able to afford employees and having a big enough operation to need an office…
these are considerations to plan VERY early on.
the reality is, you SHOULD be working with others. even if they are partners not paid employees…
if you don’t set out from the beginning to join forces with others, you really have no chance of making any business work.
there are a number of ways to find partners or to setup skill exchanges with others so you don’t have to PAY employees or contractors. something i go into depth about in chapters 8 and 9 of the Internet Business Academy.
but the most difficult thing about working with others at a distance is COMMUNICATION.
and without a physical environment it is nearly impossible to retain employees!
