This joke I thought was hilarious when I was 14 reminds me of people who’ve been asking for DETAILS about how we get 30 and 40% SALES rates from a ghetto email list.

Let’s first understand what a RATE is, since so many dumb people pretend to practice Science in marketing so they can sound smart. We can thank the Gooroos again for more of their rubbish.
A RATE is a representation that NORMALISES two or more pieces of data that come from the SAME data-set so we can compare them fairly. In layman’s terms:
It’s a way to compare apples to apples.
When I tell you that we convert leads to sales at 30+%, that rate by itself should mean NOTHING to you. I just tell you this to FUGK you up.
I know there are few people practicing internet marketing who actually get this rate, regardless of their price-point, product, or market.
But those writing in to inquire about how on earth this is possible are asking the wrong dang question.
Our sales rate has NOTHING to do with you.
It’s based on OUR data-set not yours. Our data is apples yours is oranges, and will never be apples.
If, on the other hand, you had two subscriber lists A and B. List A had 100 people and list B had 300 people and you wanted to compare which was the better of two email selling methods for the same product to the same market…you’d need a sales rate for each list to compare fairly. Oranges compared to oranges.
The rate from my list has no relevance to be compared to the rate from yours.
But I can understand why people care about MY rate.
It’s because like the doctor in the joke I told, they have no frame of reference.
Since they’ve never systematically produced sales from their own mailing list, they want to compare if they’re getting anything close to a good ‘rate’.
But a rate is not the right metric for you…unless you’ve produced some sales with one method and want to try another. Your original rate might be good, the new rate might be better.
The right metric is how much total revenue you made versus how much in total you’ve spent on training, tools, subscriptions, resources, outsourcing, and advertising.
If you’re still not producing ANY revenue or have never broken even, then that’s the only thing you should worry about.
