Do you “Swipe”?
When you see a good ad promoting a product like yours, do
you copy it to promote your stuff instead?
Do you go looking for your favourite gooroo’s squeeze page
and use a watered down version of their headline, hoping to get their result?
When you see someone’s great sales email, do you copy it,
make a few modifications and send it to your list?
Swiping is a popular pastime for Internet Marketers.
It used to mean “draw inspiration from”…but it has come to
mean blatant theft.
They say imitation is the best form of flattery. But I think
it’s bullshyt. Criminal, unethical, and a sure way to get nailed in a nasty law
But hey, I didn’t bring you here to talk with you about
I want you to think WHO you swipe ads, websites, copy, and
landing pages from.
Because if you’re going to draw inspiration from others
(which is perfectly ok), you may as well take inspiration from the best.
Let me put this into context for you.
A few years ago, I realized that online marketing gooroos are
always SO fond of putting down corporate websites and their advertising…
And yet, outside the gooroo niche, no one knows their brand.
Sure, they they appear to have a large and responsive
following and they’re making lots of milllionzz
But they’re dwarved next to say…
Facebook. iContact. 1ShoppingCart. Clickbank. aWeber.
Twitter. Huffington Post. iStockphoto.
Don’t you think, if anyone knows about EFFECTIVE online sales
and advertising, it’s them?

When I draw inspiration, I let the big, BIG boys be my leaders.
For one, they’re in an ENTIRELY different market from me,
selling completely different products and services. Even if I imitate a little
too closely, it’s never obvious.
Compare the Huffington Post’s homepage to mine…
Did you even notice the similarity before I pointed it out?
Secondly, they’re actually big enough that they HAVE to keep
their advertising and marketing totally transparent.
Lots of greedy eyes on them, waiting for them to screw up. They’ve
got a lot to lose.
Big brands are great for drawing inspiration. Clearly their
marketing works if they’re reaching the masses and earning the real big bux.
