you don’t feel like doin jack.
and i certainly don’t swing that way, unless jack is short for jaqueline…but even then i’m a married man har har.
so today is one of those days.
but i was planning to write an email about facebook etiquette. i mean, these rules aren’t written down anywhere or anything like that but if you’re in marketing, you really need to learn to use facebook like a PERSON.
like what’s up with all these nitwits that TAG people on shyt that has nothing to do with them?
people think it’s cool to just post an ad on their wall and then tag every damn person they have as a “facebook friend”.
that’s just desperate, ok?
you want to FORCE people to look at your dumb ad post?
look, i get that tagging is a cool feature because people can’t help being curious about who has mentioned them in a post and what they’re saying about them.
but you’re REALLY gonna go and force everyone to look at your post?
it’s THAT important?
lolz. c’mon, if it was that important, people would have looked at it without being tagged and they would’ve shared it with their friends on their own.
anyway…
with some 2,000 friends or whatever (who’s counting anyway?), i get like 50 tags a day and perhaps i’m the fool because i let my curiosity get the best of me and i find myself subjected to every nitwit who thinks it’s a good idea to advertise this way.
let me be perfectly clear…
it’s a CRAP idea.
it’s a sure way to irritate me and i would appreciate if you remember to exclude me from your tags in future.
i hate being forced to look at things that don’t concern me, and i won’t click your ad or buy anything from you anyway, so you’re wasting your time.
while i usually shrug it off as an annoyance of facebook, i typically have to go in there, untag myself and delete the corresponding post on my wall.
it’s annoying to have to do that 50 times a day, ok?
and my wall is a place i like to keep clear of other people’s ads. MY wall is allowed to have my ads, and your wall can have your ads all over it if it wants. but keep them off my wall.
facebook for me (and almost every human – except marketers who aren’t human anyway), facebook is a social outlet where i get to be myself. and if i let you in as a “friend” i expect you to respect that i’m going to be myself.
and guess what?
i’m NOT a nice person!
i don’t try to be either. just because i’m the owner of a web business doesn’t mean my life is going to be censored because i have customers who’ve asked to join my inner circle.
my facebook is like a REALITY show about my life.
you’ll get to see me as the real person i am. and that’s just how it is.
so when some douche decided to tag me recently and i went in to untag myself and remove the post from my wall…i had enough.
i decided to give this guy a taste of his own medicine.
i wrote on MY wall that facebook should un-invent the tag feature so that *insert profanities here* like *insert spammer’s name here* wouldn’t subject me to their crap.
i proceeded to tag the guy so that he could see what it is like to have to untag yourself and remove an unwanted post from your wall.
LOL get this…he private messaged me to REMOVE the post from my wall because he didn’t like it hahaha!
so i told him where he could stick it with some choice language.
and this set him off in a tirade of racist profanities and hate speech on my wall, in private messages, and so on. upon ignoring him, he tried harder to provoke me so i blocked him.
at which point he went to any social content he could find of mine online repeating his racist profanities verbatim and spamming my content with untruths intended to damage my reputation.
little did he know, i own my content and can easily remove his nonsense. besides, my customers and subscribers who already know me GET that i am real and i don’t do fakeness just to sell more shyt.
so it really doesn’t affect me.
but this is the problem with social media advertising. it verges on spam. and there’s no “nice” way to spam someone without shytting them off.
and i don’t care if you agree or disagree, quite honestly. because online socialising is the only place i get to be myself without worrying about what anyone thinks.
i’ve decided to use my facebook wall as a social learning environment. it’s a strange mode to teach in, and relatively unexplored territory…but this is my take on SOCIAL marketing and it’s mine.
my social strategy?
i show marketers what their prospects and customers think of them and their crap. and i do it as ME.
you want to get close, you better be ready to be called out when you do something dumb.
and truth is, hardly ANYONE knows how to use social media to sell. but i do. and i’ve created viral campaigns that have taken the industry by storm when i was in the mood for it.
when i design things a certain way and i want to sell to my social following, i do…and people share and sell more for me.
