Should Ads Start with Question-Type Headlines?

A subscriber writes…

   “Hi Jim,

   “My boss insists that I should use questions in the ad headline or some other exciting hook that keeps people reading. What are your thoughts on this?”

Aww snap! Have you heard retarded advice like this?

If your goal is to just raise Click-Thru-Rate, then by all means do that dumb shit.

People online are in a hurry. They don’t read.

In fact, you’re lucky if anyone reads past the headline of your ad. And if they click in excitement or curiosity before reading the details of what you’re offering, you’re just burning money.

Exceiting headlines like, “FREE MONEY!” will get the dick…err click…but the click quality is rubbish. The visitor is not properly primed, and they’ll bounce within seconds of arriving.

Also, people answer “YES” with their mouse. So if you know you will pay for every click, and your ad begins with a leading question, it will cost you every time someone answers “yes”.

Are all those “yes’s” worth paying for though? Do they align with your goals and objectives?

Probably not.

Ask any internet marketer. After they have obsessively tried to increase their click-thru-rate, the moment it goes up, they’re crying about how expensive their traffic is.

Which isn’t even about the cost per click as you imagine.

It’s about the useless clicks they attracted which were not designed to serve their real objective: to get sales.

This is why i design my ad campaigns to deliberately REDUCE click-thru-rate… by increasing impressions (which widens the pool of people who might see the ad, thereby increasing my ad’s chance of finding a buyer)… and by maximising click quality.

This means i write BORING headlines and more expressive ad bodies.

Is it counter intuitive?
