Hey, sorry it’s been a few days since I sent an email. I know
some of you missed your dose of traffic advice from jim…but new product launches
are super hectic and I just needed a rest.
Anyway, this topic’s been on my mind for a couple days…
You ever see those kinda deals for online products that go:
“For a limited time only”
Or “Only 15 spots left”
They use SCARCITY.
The other day, I was reading a sales page for a
make-money-online product where the guy went to great lengths to discredit
other make money products.
One of the clues he gave the reader of a definite scam is if
they sell using “false scarcity”.
This is funny…
I hear people talking about it all the time, like it’s a bad
thing.
So let me ask…
Is there such a thing as REAL scarcity in selling?
I mean, is there a company who has no choice but to sell less product?
Truth is, all scarcity in selling is manufactured.
If you go down to the mall and find a 50% off sign, the
subtext…the unwritten message is that there’s a time-limit. You can save if you
act NOW. Wait and the discount will disappear.
They could make the discount permanent if they want… they’re
the ones setting their price.
But that would defy the purpose of having a temporary price reduction.
You want the latest iPhone?
You have to pre-order it NOW since stock is going to be
limited.
Really? Apple can’t make enough phones for everyone?
But here’s the thing…
Good marketing is about making the buyer “lose their mind”
for a short time…let their guard down, just long enough to spend money.
…Forget their other responsibilities and everything else
they need to buy, so they can buy from you.
There’s nothing sinister about it.
People need that kind of push.
You don’t want your business to make LESS money.
You manufacture scarcity because it makes people want to spend
NOW not later.
But discounts, sales, and price reductions, when given too
often can have a negative effect on your business.
Your buyers get trained to expect discounts.
And to buy ONLY when a sale is going on.
They get “wise” and think, “hey, a sale is around the
corner. I’ll just buy then”.
There’s a much better way to get a lot of buyers who want to
spend on your stuff NOW.
And there’s still room for people who want to buy later too. As long as you’re sure they’ll come to you when they’re ready.
You don’t have to manufacture any kind of scarcity…or
make anyone lose their mind.
How?
Advertise.
When you introduce new people to your business every day, you’re
bound to be found by enough people who are ready to buy your product today.
If your product is good, they’ll buy it.
And if they’re not in a hurry, that’s ok…they’ll buy when they’re ready.
