Poor man’s retargeting

Facebook and Apple are fighting. Marketers are shitting themselves.

Retargeting is the weapon of choice for everyone who wants to go straight for the kill, and git dat money baby!

In case you’re not sure what retargeting is (and have no idea what the beef between Facebook and Apple is about)…here’s a tldr.

Have you ever clicked an ad for something, say, that “Good Morning Snore Solution”, and then all of a sudden you would keep seeing those ads EVERYWHERE?

That’s retargeting. Which is actually a small part of something called Behavioural Marketing (but few people know that).

To actually pull off this kind of advertising, a special tracking technology is used. And long story short, Apple and others are making it difficult for advertising platforms to use this kind of tracking. Because it invades their users’ privacy.

So the internet marketing community is going crazy.

For many, their entire sales strategy hinges on this technology. Marketers have complicated rules about which ad should be seen after someone visits this page or watches this video for x amount of minutes…

And all of a sudden, this isn’t going to work for them any more.

What are they going to do?

You have to understand, before retargeting was around, most of the big marketers didn’t do any paid advertising themselves. They used affiliates, who did. Let those suckers use their money.

Big marketers built their mailing lists on the backs of affiliates, and then they committed marketing incest, swapping spit with other big name marketers in joint venture partnerships.

When retargeting came along, it changed everything.

They could skip the mailing list and go straight for the sale. And if someone didn’t respond, fuck them, they chase them and keep trying to sell until they’re blue in the face.

No need to create clever entertaining or engaging content, or really anything of substance, not when you can create a small handful of variations on a sales pitch and you can keep cramming it down people’s throats trying to make them see it.

So why am i not losing my head with everyone else?

Simple.

Because i’ve never relied heavily on retargeting.

I use it. It’s in my arsenal of advertising tools. But it’s a VERY small part of my sales and marketing strategy.

What i do is, i follow the fundamentals i teach in the Super Traffic Machine. Always have. Those are methods that are tried and tested and TIMELESS.

I buy targeted ads.

I turn visitors into subscribers.

I build a list and a relationship with my subscribers, understand their problems and pains and frustrations.

And i sell them solutions.

You see, the mailing list is the poor man’s retargeting. It’s very low-tech. Doesn’t require any complicated rules or special tracking technologies. No privacy breaching.

People interested in information about a solution you offer raise their hand by providing their email. You give them that information and see if they’re ready to buy. You repeat and can do this as long as they remain subscribed and interested.

Consider the difference in quality.

With normal retargeting, the only condition a person needs to satisfy for the marketer to hunt them down in every corner of the internet, is to simply LAND on their page.

But with the “poor man’s retargeting”, a person has to show enough interest to actually OPT IN by correctly typing every character of their email address, and submitting it, to say they want to hear from you.

Give me 1,000 subscribers like that, over a million people who just “landed” on my page.

And consider the difference in cost.

With retargeting, you pay for EVERY subsequent engagement. Every click on your ad. Even the repeats.

While with “poor man’s retargeting”, from the 2nd engagement, it’s absolutely FREE.

Consider the dynamic of the relationship. With normal retargeting, people are annoyed by the ads and they’re convinced someone is spying on them. While with “poor man’s retargeting”, they get upset when you DON’T email them.

You tell me which is better.
