a few weeks ago i heard that Google was looking to bring free Wifi hotspots to restaurants, cafes, and other strategic places in the 3rd world.
of course such an undertaking costs lots of dough as you might imagine; equipment costs, ISP subscription fees, etc in thousands of locations.
but do you know why they’re investing in free internet availability?
for the greater good?
I think not.
Google already has the majority of the internet population in their “market share” when it comes to search and almost everything else. their market share is stretched to its limits.
the internet population, however, does not represent the WORLD population.
in many countries, there are still places where even the smartphone thing hasn’t fully broken out.
like in Dubai, for example, which is considered pretty technologically advanced for the third world, mobile data plans are extremely limiting. you could pay several hundred dollars just for a 2GB data plan.
i’d finish that in days.
in some parts of saudia arabia, people still live in tents and there is spotty mobile coverage and areas where the internet doesn’t even exist.
in rural areas of the US, there is limited broadband and spotty mobile connections in even urban areas.
and in a countries like Jordan and New Zealand, there are major limitations on home-based broadband data plans.
Google recognises the population of the Internet is much smaller than the population of the world.
What if Google could increase the size of the internet population, by introducing more people to the Internet.
They would increase their market share uncontested.
it’s easier to make a non-internet user become a Google user (once given free internet) than to convert a Bing or Yahoo user to a Google user.
convert more “non users” into “users”?
hey sounds like Obama’s strategy to win his first election. he worked on youth and lower classes who had never voted. while others tried to convert republican voters to democratic voters and vice versa.
Today, you find yourself faced with the same choice.
Our online marketing space is saturated with competitors…but for now, they’re mostly marketing to desktop users.
If you learn to build mobile apps, you go into untapped territory where few competitors are marketing…
and it’s far easier to make a customer from a tablet or mobile user who doesn’t see a whole lot of ads from online marketers or home business offers…
instead of trying to get the existing desktop user who has plenty of options for where to buy their home business opportunity and marketing training.
