i paused all my converting keywords…what have i been smoking?

heya, 

still on my forced vacation at l’hôpital as the French say. while here, i mused in a social status update:

   “wonder why i paused all the keywords that were converting yesterday and today.”

i hoped some clever body would put forward a theory to explain my crazy behaviour. perhaps i would understand myself. but no such luck. 🙂

what i like about Google’s traffic is that YOU decide the kind of people that come to your website, using the keywords they search for.

as a Google advertiser, my biggest challenge is to figure out which of the infinity of possible searches are the ones that my buyers type before they’re ready to spend money.

after all, just because a keyword is popular, doesn’t mean it will convert into a lead or a sale.

so what the heck have i been smoking if i’m deliberately killing the keywords that have CONVERTED and proven to bring quality, good, qualified traffic…FOR A REALLY REASONABLE cost.

i’ve got two reasons…one of which i’ll explain. the second, you’ll have to see Traffic KickStart 2.0 to find out. 

First, know this: On Google, when you place your ad, you don’t have to pay a single cent, even if a million people see it.

you do, however, pay every time someone who sees your ad CLICKS IT.

how much you pay will depend on a several factors, one of which is the level of competition from other advertisers.

these keywords i was killing were ridiculously competitive. we’re talking $5, $7, $10 per click. in fact, this entire market is brutal.

while competitive markets are my specialty, i have yet to see an online marketing deal where a SINGLE CLICK is worth much more than a few cents…a dollar at most in revenue.

in fact, a click or a “visit” to your website in itself is not a valuable thing. you make back $0 from a click.

heck, even a lead rarely has a dollar value.

until the person behind that ad view, click, or form fill does a meaningful BUYING action…only then, do all the actions that came prior begin to have value.

and that value is IMPLIED by the buying action. Whatever the value, it is diluted by all the people who came before that did NOT buy, who viewed, who clicked, who filled forms too.

without knowing what the value of a click is, i can’t possibly keep spending $10 for a single click from any keyword, even if that keyword converted into an email “form fill”.

this is part 1 of why i paused those otherwise “good” keywords.

but what am i relying on to get traffic that suits me, keywords that convert, but without the same insane competition, nor the whacky prices?
