Chronicles Of Crappy Business Advice, Part 1

I came across this question in a recent online discussion:

   “What’s the worst business advice you’ve ever been given?”

I’ve had a TON of shitty business advice over the years, but one stands head and shoulders above the rest:

NEVER talk about politics or religion, because those topics alienate a lot of potential customers.

I read this advice early on in my career, from a guy who at the time was considered the leader in online MLM lead generation and who was highly respected. Unfortunately, as I got to know him more intimately, i’ve come to respect him less and take his advice even less seriously.

It took years for me to get up the courage to try something different…

…and when i did, he and his cronies alienated me for it…even blacklisted me in the industry, warning customers and clients to keep away from me.

Until this day, i am no longer invited to speak at industry events and i am disconnected entirely from all the industry “leaders”.

At the time, i was seeing terrible practices by a lot of “leaders” in the industry. Yet, there was this unspoken rule we all followed, that you should stay quiet, say only good things about other leaders, because you might need their help in a launch promo.

I’d rather not get into the ugly details, but here’s a quick example of the kind of people we had to only say good things about…

One guy, who was a close friend of the leader with the shitty advice, I had the “opportunity” to work with him in my early internet marketing career. I left everything and flew halfway across the world to join some colleagues who were starting a project with him.

Over the next few months, he did a lot of really shitty things to me personally, to my partners, and to our students.

For instance, he sold high-end masterminds to our students, giving each a different price, depending on what they could afford. We didn’t know these details at the time, but while my partners and i delivered the masterminds that were sold, often we were not paid. He kept any large payments for himself while telling us those students did not pay or that they paid far less than they actually did.

Soon after, he spearheaded a popular industry event that runs until this day, which included every leader in the industry.

i couldn’t call out that guy publicly.

Calling him out would taint everyone associated, and who continued to promote him while he cheated his customers.

One day, after i’d seen enough, and learned there was nobody pure or innocent…i decided to strike off on my own.

Those holy “partnerships” that i was supposed to desire so badly that i should turn a blind eye to everything…they just weren’t worth it.

I could build my own list, generate my own traffic, and sell my own products. I didn’t need ANY of those guys to do it. Sure it was gonna take me longer, and i’d have to learn some skills i didn’t have, and i’d probably have to work a lot harder…but at least i could speak my mind, be myself, and be candid about my viewpoints.

If i felt like sharing my political or religious views….

…or i felt like calling out a popular practice or a leader i disagreed with…

And that ended up alienating some people…so what?

What i quickly learned is that being candid and authentic, knowing full well it will piss off many subscribers, also endears a lot of people to you!

In fact, it forces your audience to pick a side.

You want them to say…

“I hate you, I can never buy from you…I despise everything you stand for!”

Or…

“I feel exactly the same, you tell it like it is!”

The former will run a mile. The latter will connect with you strongly, trust you more, and want to be your customer over anyone else’s.

Btw, while i completely and wholeheartedly hated Donald Trump, i predicted from the first day of his candidacy that he could genuinely win.

Because he did EXACTLY this.

With his messaging, he ROYALLY pissed off people outside his base while simultaneously turning his base into militantly loyal buffoons.

Here’s the lesson…

If you’re trying to keep everybody happy, nobody will feel strongly about anything you say.

A lukewarm audience isn’t interested…you’ve given them no reason to care. And in turn, they don’t buy.

But if you’re authentic, uncompromising, and you fearlessly speak your mind…you’ll turn off a whole bunch of your subscribers but you’ll also create furiously loyal followers, readers, and buyers.

Which makes more money and is way more fun.
