My Adventure with Sour Cream – and Your Adventure with Selling Online

Well I did it.
In an earlier email, I happened to mention that I hate short-cut takers in business because they aren’t CAREFUL.
When following a marketing plan…just like with a recipe…care is important!
The reason I MADE sour cream instead of just buying it at the store is that I make authentic Mexican food from scratch. No bought tortillas, canned refried beans, flavor sachets, or anything like that. I make everything myself.
It gives me a strange satisfaction to control the fat, sugar, salt, and spiciness of what I eat.
I enjoy knowing what’s in my food.
And plus, I’ve been MONTHS searching for sour cream here and I don’t even think it has a name in Arabic. Nobody knows what it is and the closest thing is called Labneh (thickened yoghurt).
Labneh is sour. It ruined my enchiladas last I used it.
I know it sounds hypocritical, because I’m always telling you that you should OUTSOURCE what you’re not good at.
But you’re forgetting that I’m VERY good in the kitchen and I’ve always had great capacity to master anything very quickly.
When following a recipe, good cooks know when substitutions can be made and when they can’t.
Similarly, experienced entrepreneurs can tell what is NECESSARY to make sales and what is not.
The Sour Cream recipe required a few spoons of regular Yoghurt as a bacterial culture and a good cream. They’re mixed together and left overnight so the bacteria in the yoghurt would reproduce and “sour” the cream.
Now I’m familiar with the idea, because I’ve made home-made yoghurt before.
I understood the when using a culture, heat would kill the bacteria we need to make the milk (or cream) sour.
So it was important that the YOGHURT was not Ultra-Heat Treated so it would have active bacteria…but I wasn’t clear whether or not the cream could be a UHT one.
I took care to check before I made the substitution of a UHT cream.
The recipe said that I should AVOID UHT cream as it yields inconsistent results.
But it did not say that the recipe WOULD NOT WORK with a UHT cream…only that it wouldn’t work well.
So I went ahead and took the short-cut of not going to the farms to find (or even make) non-UHT cream.
The next day, Holy fug on a motherstick!
It worked. I had authentic sour cream!
Even though I took a short-cut, it wasn’t at the expense of my goal. I wanted to test the concept and see if I could MAKE actual sour-cream.
If it worked, I could always fine-tune the sour cream later.
But I was careful to understand whether a UHT cream would cause the culturing process to fail. And since it didn’t, I went against the recommendation.
In the same way, if you are an EXPERIENCED online entrepreneur, and someone gives you a strategy that worked for them that you want to try–you can make substitutions or skip entire steps without losing much of the desired effect.
On the other hand, if you are INEXPERIENCED, you are likely to skip critical steps in your “rush” that would make you LOSE money and make the technique fail altogether!
When you advertise a new offer, you hope that your advertising will lead to at least one sale.
The steps in between: choosing related search keywords to target, increasing impressions, getting clicks, converting clicks to leads, and turning leads to sales are all OPTIONAL steps.
They are RECOMMENDED for maximum sales effect…but whether it takes 2 or 5,000 clicks to get a sale, your goal is FIRST to get a sale with least work possible.
You can get rid of ANY step in between except: 1) advertising and 2) selling.
Once you have a sale, you can refine.
If you insist on doing ALL the steps (impressions, clicks, leads, and follow-up) but you do one of them carelessly, you’ll interrupt the flow that gets sales and it will ultimately cost you more.

At the very least, understand that you only NEED two steps:
an ad
and a sales page.
And then be willing to pay for enough traffic, for as long as it takes to get a sale.
It will cost more than hiring us to do the intermediate steps for you, but at least you’ll get a sale you can use as a basis for your refnement in phase 2.
