I think I’m
gonna die young.
Not that
I’m sick or anything, just these past couple years I feel like i don’t have
a whole lot of time left.
Is it
normal to feel this way?
I don’t
know.
But these
days, I reflect a lot about things people said to me when I was younger…that I
thought I understood…
Only now I
realize that maybe… I didn’t hear the urgency
or severity of what they were
saying.
For
example, my dad, for as long as I can remember has complained about back-pain.
He described the feeling like “pepper”, like electricity, and a number of other
choice words.
I
sympathized with him.
But as far
as I was concerned, it was dad’s problem.
And my understanding was that it was just an annoyance, like a sore thumb. Something that heals and he can
work around, live a normal life. Do regular things. Hardly an excuse.
How naïve!
Now, I’m
older and i “get it”. It feels like i’m driving an old clunker for a body,
about to blow any minute. Yep, I’ve got back pains. Leg pains. Neck pains.
Everything pains.
Worst part
is, I haven’t even had my first son yet.
So chances
are, in a few weeks when he’s born, the only version of his dad he’ll know
is this.
And when I
tell HIM, “oh my back feels like pepper” or whatever, he’s not really gonna get
how BAD that is. He’s not going to understand why I struggle to do the things
he takes for granted.
And he’ll
feel immortal like he’s never going to go through anything like it.
Just like I
once did.
So what’s
the point?
When
selling and marketing, we take communication for granted.
Like talking
or writing are somehow perfect at getting ideas across.
They’re
not.
Few people can
really communicate the ideas in their head.
Even
fewer can comprehend…
Although we get the words exchanged with us, we don’t feel the
urgency, the pain, or the emotion that forms those words.
Like when I
told you earlier I think I will die
young. You read
that over like it was just a passing thought.
To you it IS a passing
thought.
But to me
it’s a constant worry I have every day. Every single experience in my life passes
through that filter.
Right now, your
customers are going through their own crises with their problems.
And if you
want to be an effective marketer, who sells solutions to people’s problems, it’s
not enough to guess and say the right words to them.
It’s not
enough to listen to what they say and echo it back to them.
You have to
feel with what they feel.
You have to
experience what they’re going through.
And there’s
no way to fake it.
That’s why
I market the way I do. Because I realize everyone’s experience is different.
So I
attract and hold onto the people whose experiences are close to mine. And these
are my people. My homies. My customers.
I’m happy
to miss anyone who doesn’t get it.
