Hey…See the new Gmail recently?
Are you worried it’s gonna drive down your sales-email open-rates
and kill your sales?
Don’t. I’ll explain in a sec, but let’s bring the others up
to speed about the new Gmail.
Gmail released a new version of their interface which has a smart
filter to make it easier to find and read important messages.
Users of Gmail now have inboxes automatically organized into
tabs called Primary, Promotions, and Social.
This has a lot of Internet Marketers worried. Since all
their email marketing will now end up in the Promotions tab of the leads and
subscribers they have worked hard (and often paid to find).
You may have seen some of their paranoid emails in your
They remind you of the value of their emails and ask you to
URGENTLY move their messages out of your Promotions tab and into your Primary.
If you’re not checking your Promotions tab in the first
place, you’re not going to see the email asking you to do this oh-so-critical
Let’s be clear…
If you use your traffic to build a mailing list of
subscribers that you send sales and follow-up emails to (and you should be!)…
That’s exactly what they are! Promotional messages.
And so what?
It’s no different from the Social notifications coming from
Facebook, LinkedIN, Twitter, GooglePlus, Instagram…which are being categorised into the Social tab.
They belong there! But does that stop people from check their Social inbox tab regularly
and just as obsessively as before?
They just might not look there first.
And that’s the only change I’ve seen come of the Promotional messages tab.
Open Rates are the
same as before…just it takes up to 24-hours longer for the opens to happen.
Meaning, when I send out messages like this one, the open-rate looks shocking at first. But slowly it climbs back up.
who used to read this newsletter are STILL finding their way to it in their inbox and reading it…just not right away.
Since there’s nothing time-sensitive in any of these
messages, I’m not concerned.
But a lot of marketers (maybe even you) SHOULD be worried.
Because the way they generate traffic into their
mailing list is all wrong.
Their subscribers are not really interested in reading their
promotions. Most were tricked into joining the mailing list with a
bribe (like a free eBook or training video).
