How Google sabotaged me and almost stopped BCC from going to print

alright, lads….erm and some of you are, of course, lovely lasses.

sunday, i announced Authority S&H and said NUFFIN about it except to make you look at the page i wrote.

yehhh!? good job!

if you’re still wondering what the name means, S&H stands for “shipping and handling”. so, like authority, with shipping & handling. that wasn’t lost on you, was it?

anyway, clever names aside, i need to tell you a horror story with a point.

it’s about the making of the Business Command Centre manual and how it almost never made it to print. while working on that manual in Feb, I decided to switch away from Microsoft Word and build this time in Google Docs.

i don’t remember why.

but maybe it’s because i have a love affair with Google while Microsoft is like an annoying ex’s more annoying daughter.

after one of my employees took 100’s of screenshots and put them in the perfect spots on the document…

… after i reviewed her work and cropped and scaled the pics to focus on the right things

… after i put arrows and labels and pointed at everything

… after i wrote and edited LOTS of text (like 300 pages)

… we had to start over again!

because when I printed a proof, the pictures looked like shit. they were blurry and impossible to see the details clearly.

no matter what i did, i couldn’t fix it. i even had the girl repeat a whole chapter’s worth of screenshots just so she could take them at full screen and then scale them down to fit.

but the images stayed shit.

it was days later, and after blowing a ream of paper, when I realised Google Docs DOWNSCALES and COMPRESSES images by default!

worse than that: it is impossible to turn off the setting.

i had to export the document to a different word processor and repeat the screenshots myself while racing against the clock to get it to the printer by the deadline.

creating a physical info product is fun, but there’s a lot to learn and plenty to go wrong. i was lucky enough to have years of experience with print publishing before making my first physical info product. i’ve been working with Photoshop since its earliest release nearly 30 years ago. And with MS Word since back when it fit on a single floppy disk.

yet, i still needed help along the way and had plenty more to learn from the experts i worked with…the designers, the printers, the co-authors, and the editors.

my point is, if you want all the benefits of a physical info product, you’ll need to screw up a lot and dig all over the place to find everything you need.
