John Paul DeJoria put it most eloquently when he said:
“Do the things that other don’t want to do. Do what’s necessary. Do what it takes, no matter what it is. And try not to hurt anybody along the way.”
DeJoria, in case you don’t know, is the billlionaire co-founder of Paul Mitchell Systems, which sells haircare products in more than 150,000 beauty salons in 87 countries. He also founded a dozen other businesses including, Patron Spirits and DeJoria diamonds.
But what a lot of people don’t know about DeJoria is that he BORROWED $700 to start John Paul Systems… and lived in his car.
Two weeks later, his first business bill was due. He knocked on Salon doors and sold his first few Shampoo orders just to pay the bill.
For two years he and his partner struggled together, “hand to mouth”, doing the unimaginable before they made their first milllion together.
That’s a great story.
But it makes me sad to hear about people trying to run online businesses with NO MONEY and yet are unwilling to do simple things…because they’re boring or not fun.
For example, did you know that most Webhosting services like hostgator and godaddy offer up to $100 free advertising voucher for Google Adwords and Bing?
But the minute I mention paid advertising to someone, they make excuses and run the other way.
Look, I started advertising my business with $50/month I allocated from my PhD scholarshio (that barely covered my rent). I knew $50 wouldn’t last long, so I added a routine that consisted of:
* 2 hours a day participating in a forum so I would create a reputation and authority for myself
* 1 daily press release to get some free traffic from NEWS websites
* 1 daily email to my mailing list to get some sales conversions from the leads I paid for
* 1 article on an article-sharing site to get more free traffic and give authority to my website
And I did this EVERY DAY.
Within a couple of months, I was making a profit of $2,000. But I didn’t use it to pay my bills or rent.
I stayed at home. I ate scraps. I built landing pages for $10 each. I walked and rode the bus everywhere. I advised prospects on the phone for hours a day.
I know this might sound tough for you to swallow.
But what you make in your business should be separated from your personal finances. That money is earned by …and owed… to your business. You stick it back in and buy MORE traffic.
That’s the only way. Your personal finances should be dealt with separately.
