Google Adwords' Traffic Conspiracy

Do you believe the “Google traffic conspiracy”?
You know, the one about how Google HATES small businesses and
wants, at any cost, to eliminate them from receiving Adwords traffic?
Funny?
I’m not laughing.
A lot of marketers, even big hot-shots, have been preaching for
years that Google wants to destroy small business and that they are mortal
enemies with direct respond advertisers.
Now I don’t know for sure whether or not this is true…
But I think the real danger is in indulging in the
conspiracy.
Here’s what I mean…
Last night, I stopped off at the Movenpick hotel to make
reservations for a friend of mine. But the daily rate was significantly higher
than what I’d seen online.
When I got home, I decided to search for a Groupon discount
to see if I could get him a better rate.
I saw a sponsored ad on Google for Groupon. So I clicked it
to see what’s up.
To my surprise, I was taken to a straight squeeze page, with
absolutely NO navigation links and only the option to subscribe by email. It was
pure direct response without a doubt.
I recalled that at some point Google tried to buy Groupon. And
I had to check if Groupon was actually a Google property. It would give me all
the proof I needed to show my students once and for all that the conspiracy is
false.
If Groupon was Google, then it means Google themselves use
direct response the way marketers want to use it –
To generate email leads they can follow-up with and sell to.
The landing page would have been the PERFECT model after which marketers should
create landing pages for Adwords.
Unfortunately, Groupon is still owned by Groupon.
But hey…
Guess what?
It doesn’t matter to me. And it shouldn’t matter to you.
I’ve never bought into the stupid conspiracy anyway. Whether
or not Google hates direct response copywriting and small business marketers…
You shouldn’t allow yourself to hide behind the excuses of “foul
play” and “bias”. Otherwise…
You won’t START using Adwords…because you heard Google hates
small businesses.
You won’t TEST using Adwords differently… because Google doesn’t
like the kind of marketing that works.
You won’t even RECOGNIZE the people who are doing Adwords
right…because they’re “special” and you’re not.
Reality is, I’ve always used direct response copy and
straight squeeze pages with Google and turned clicks into profit. The
conspiracy never had any bearing on my
marketing.
All I’ve ever done is just a couple of SUBTLE things
differently, undetectable to even the savvy marketer.
But if you know these small differences, Google Adwords will
be the BEST source of traffic you’ve ever known.
