You know why hardly anyone makes it?
I mean, yeah sure, you hear about the guy who did a quarter
mil in sales in 6 months and that’s dandy. But guys like that share their “secrets”
openly and they’re not even afraid of competition.
Do you know why?
Because YOU customize.
Hey there’s nothing wrong with making a process your own. But
everyone wants a FORMULA for successful marketing, yet no one follows any. A
formula is only useful to someone who wants the exact steps for success.
Customizing is why people fail.
And keep failing.
Here’s what I mean…
A while back, my wife learned that I like Caramel Popcorn.
So she decided to make it as a surprise for me.
Now, Aya, my wife is a STAR in the kitchen. She makes
desserts for restaurants, she published a recipe book, and she writes a daily
blog with home-keeping tips which has a sizable readership.
But this was in her early days of marriage.
So she looked up some “formulas” online and headed into the
kitchen while I was on a consultation call.
I keep a low-fat diet. And I’m particularly against the use
of butter in cooking. I don’t even keep butter in the house!
But Aya found that all the caramel popcorn recipes prescribed
butter. So she customized by substituting butter with olive oil.
The thing is, butter is a fat that solidifies when cooled. Olive
oil, on the other hand remains liquid when cool.
Which made for a disastrous result in caramel popcorn…but it
was a lesson well-learned.
Similarly, the online marketer who is learning traffic and
online selling is constantly making major substitutions.
While some things are easily replaced, like for eg, the
quantity of sugar in a cake…other things are critical to the success of a
recipe.
And in online marketing, some things can be modified, but there
are certain core things in a formula that can’t be substituted with anything
else.
The challenge?
Knowing what can be substituted in a marketing formula and
what needs to remain unchanged.
A formula is meant to be executed exactly as is. Everything
from the time taken, to the components, to the process has been measured and
tested to get a desired result.
A formula saves you time experimenting. If you’re not going
to follow a formula, don’t look for one. Keep experimenting for the rest of
your life.
My advice to my wife when I tried the damp caramel popcorn
was: next time, do the recipe exactly as it’s written and the NEXT TIME you can
make small customizations to improve the recipe.
My advice to the marketer still failing to get a sale online?
The same.
Find someone who has done all the experimenting and shares their
“recipe”. Then execute their formula exactly as specified at least once. Customize
later.
