You hear the news?
Facebook’s releasing a new marketing feature: Video Ads.
But I think the whole idea is stupid.
It’s not like the gazillion users with free membership contribute
directly toward keeping the lights on at the Zuckerberg “crib”.
So Zucky has to sell ad space to survive.
But businesses aren’t buying ads from his platform.
According to an analyst I heard recently, it’s because their
ad program isn’t working well.
People use Facebook to meet their friends and “hang out”. And
the ad model is “interruption-based” which means it tries to take focus away
from a person’s current activity to another more interesting one.
But what could be more interesting than hanging out with
friends, kicking back, sharing cat videos, and liking stuff? It’s enough to
make the most interesting ad seem boring.
I’ve been saying this a long time, but few cared.
People still think they’re going to get good, buying traffic
from Facebook — for products that would never in a million years be more interesting
Weird thing is…
LinkedIN and Google+, which are also social networks who
both use a similar ad-supported “free membership” model don’t suffer the same
Because LinkedIN is a professional network and it’s a
perfect environment for B2B sales.
While Google+ is hooked up to the Google search engine…where
people DO go when they’re looking for solutions or when shopping.
So it’s kind of a no-brainer, with the exception of gaming
and dating products, Facebook isn’t the best place to find new buyers.
But the smart guys use Facebook differently.
They use it as a relationship-building tool for EXISTING
customers. It’s a new channel of communication between business and customer:
Feedback, suggestions, complaints, etc.
Stuff that promotes and increases repeat sales.
Unfortunately for Facebook, communication is free. Lolz.
Anyway, the point is, not every kind of advertising is the best
type for YOUR business.
Some would be a total waste of time and money. While others
would be a PERFECT fit.
