Let me ask you this…
Why are YOU so fascinated with Social Media marketing?
Hasn’t the novelty worn off yet?
For many business
owners it’s just another way to rub the ole ego. Another complication of more metrics to measure and talk about.
Here’s what I mean.
Earlier today my wife and I were watching Narin; a dubbed
Turkish TV show. There’s this half-crazy guy, the son of a rich man. In an
earlier episode, he was celebrating his wedding.
A dangerous Turkish custom of celebration is to fire
guns into the air. Similarly, in Narin, the half-crazy guy and a group of his friends
are seen to dance around the guests while firing off guns.
Suddenly, he notices the girl he’s really in love with in
the audience.
He takes aim at her and fires a couple of shots into her
chest. Like I said, the guy is “half” crazy.
The police arrive and arrest him. And of course, since
theirs is a small town, the story of the wedding-shooting makes the local news.
His bride later sees the story in the newspaper and gets the
scissors to clip…not the article…but her photo from the newspaper. She wanted
it for a keepsake.
Funny?
Yes. But this is exactly what the typical business owner online
is doing.
He’s obsessed with social media accolades; they give
them a little ego rub. He’s pleased because he thinks this means his business
is popular, since others are recognizing it.
Like the girl in Narin, who is probably as crazy as the man
she married…she probably had a gang of photos from the wedding. But she was
pleased that her picture appeared in the newspaper.
For what purpose?
It doesn’t matter.
Similarly, the business owner obsessed with social media is
fooling himself into thinking it’s about advertising and traffic.
But they don’t really have purpose. Instead, they focus on
the new metrics of “likes” and “retweets” and “fans” and “followers”… and
forget money.
All these are pointless metrics, honestly. They mean
nothing. Other than to be some kind of trophy or keepsake for the big-ego
business.
They think it’s a testament to the fact that they have some
sort of celebrity status in a medium, which…let’s be real here…your garbage guy
can start a Facebook account and get a like every now and then.
But to what end?
How do these new metrics of popularity serve business?
What does a “Like” mean in terms of money?
What does a “Re-Tweet” say about profit?
What does a gazillion followers say about sales?
NOTHING.
But these metrics COULD mean lots more money, profit, and
sales…if you do social media marketing correctly.
And by correctly, I mean you ignore these useless metrics
and focus instead on creating marketing materials that meet the needs of your
customers. Then you will get likes, retweets, and fans without seeming to try. They
will just be a RESULT of your success at selling.
