Driving the Web Traffic HORSIE

So we’re celebrating.
Sitting beside me is my best bud and childhood pal, “gremlin”.
Strange name?
Sure. It was his teenage chat-handle…which unlike mine, (ghostboy!)…
stuck well into adulthood.
It’s been at least a few months since we had the whole gang
together. One of our buddies had just been recognized for the nation’s best government
mobile app award, and we were there to celebrate.
With everyone catching up and talking over each other, I turned
to gremlin and ask:
“bro, how was your show?”
He seemed somewhat flushed and embarrassed as he responded, “Let’s
just not talk about THAT.”
I’m confused.
For a moment, I thought perhaps I’d blown the whistle on a
secret. So like a fool, I lowered my voice.
Gremlin’s a talented guy. An electronics engineering
graduate from the United Kingdom’s finest school. Employed in the lucrative
petroleum industry he consults on drill-sites off-shore and on.
But the show had nothing to do with his job.
“Why? Did something go wrong?” I inquired.
“It was a disaster. I lost 20,000.”
Gremlin does well for himself and makes good money. But he’s
always dreamed of being in business.
And he’s not all talk either. Over the years he’s put his
money to work in a diverse array of side-investments.
The show was just one of his many ideas…
See, he’d recently partnered up with a British play-writer
to produce and promote her show in the UAE.
Last week he confided in me that they ran into a few snags when
flying in their actors in from overseas…the whole ordeal messed with their
deadlines and left very little time to sell the show.
Put yourself in his shoes.
You’ve just tried out a business idea you THOUGHT would make
a killing.
You invested into it, risked your time and money…
And then you lost both.
You’ve been burned.
You’re licking your wounds wondering where you went wrong.
But not this guy.
What was his next move?
“I gotta get up on
that horse again don’t I. And I learned a LOT of stuff, made many important
connections…. And hey people turned up, even though it was my first time. I’m
gonna do it again…but next time I’ll leave more lead-time to prepare.”
What a champ.
The thing about business that many people don’t get is you
have to learn through experience. And mistakes and loss are just part of that
learning curve.
Even if you studied a business in and out, you can’t really
know what you don’t know until you’ve tried it, experienced it first-hand, and
seen for yourself what it’s like.
Education is not free.
Experience is not free.
There’s always a price to pay, and you’ve gotta be willing
to pay it.
It’s the same really with anything.
Do you remember learning to drive?
You could read the driving manual…you could watch someone
else do it…
But you’re never really going to know how to drive until you’ve
got behind a wheel, stalled the car a few hundred times, and figured it out for
Of course having an experienced driving instructor helps you
cut that learning curve down. But even then, you gotta actually do it, make
your own mistakes, and learn from them to get the full experience.
What happens if you choose to forgo the expense of an
You can still learn. It just takes longer and you may have
to crash the car a few times first.
But I don’t know a single person who gives up on learning to
drive after stalling the car…or even after an accident.
When you’re generating web traffic, it’s the same.
You can read a hundred articles, buy a dozen books, and
still not really understand traffic, until you’ve gone out and generated web traffic
Some people will keep trying for years and lose and fail until
they either give up or make enough mistakes to learn what not to do.
Others will learn from someone else’s experience and “get it”
