I had to let someone go recently.
Wasn’t one of those dramatic Donald trump conference room “YOU’RE FIRED!” episodes.
It never is with me.
I’m a non-confrontational kinda guy but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a scary temper.
One of my colleagues who was involved in the decision said:
“Jim you gotta do this professional.
“Send a termination letter saying something like-
‘We no longer need your services. Good luck for the future.'”
But I didn’t do that.
I dismissed the employee the same way I dismiss anything I don’t like…
The same way I react to an annoying email comment, a dumb idea or suggestion, or even the occasional ad copy submitted by my staff for my approval that I’m not particularly thrilled with.
Ignore, is what I do.
I freeze out employees and partners to show dissatisfaction without losing my shyt.
It’s not professional, but you haven’t seen me angry. Trust me ignoring is the lesser evil.

Years ago I hired a full time salary worker named Sheldon for a really busy period of product creation to edit our multimedia as it was produced.
20 videos/week for 4 months were expected by customers who already prepaid for our product. Delay was not an option.
I have a very strict 3-phase process for editing I insist on. It takes forever to get it perfect. But there was no way time would permit me to get it “prefect” on my own.
When the workload got too big for Sheldon, I hired another guy (more expensive).
Sheldon was really good and a fast learner…his final edits were amazing.
Except I spent all my time before a deadline chasing his stupid arse.
I had my assistant auto-dial him for 6hrs straight until we got a response. And when we got through he always had an excuse. He was out and needed hours to get home before he could start last minute.
On the other hand, the new guy who charged about 4 times as much because he was paid on a per project basis, was not as good.
But he always showed up and delivered on time, no matter the load.
So one day, I had enough of Sheldon’s sporadic appearances and the stress of his “cutting it too close” nonsense.
That day, I assigned both guys the same videos and did not follow or chase either employee.
For two weeks Sheldon disappeared, while the other guy did ALL the work.
When Sheldon’s monthly payment was nearly due, he showed up.
“ey dude…you got any work for me?” he asked.
Big mistake…I responded.
“You tell me. We’ve been flat out here – you were the only one on vacation…”
Pretty soon we exchanged heated words and I let him know he was fired with a tirade that would put Trump’s bald-room to shame.
Insults included all his dead relatives and various disgusting sexual acts to be performed with them.
Hey I can keep my temper – but if it gets out, years of therapy wouldn’t be enough to undo the damage to my victims. I have a knack for knowing how to push sick psycho buttons.
Later he apologised for his mistake, but now I make a point to just ignore what I don’t like.
Here’s the lesson…
You can’t rely on one of anything.
You will always be in weak spot when you depend on just one.
1 – 1 = 0
So I have at least two of everything, always.
Two assistants: Penny 1 and Penny 2.
Two PPC engines sending me traffic, even if they don’t both bring leads “cheap”: Google and Microsoft.
Two mailing lists I send two different subject lines, in case gets no opens.
Two landing page variants…not to split test, but as backup in case one completely flops and wastes all the days traffic.
You need to do the same to always be in a position of strength. Two of everything, at least.
If you’re getting traffic with JUST facebook or seo or social media…maybe its cheap and easy and you love it…
But what’s going to happen if your traffic stops flowing today?
Or you piss around with your traffic method of choice for months only to find out that method will never convert for your offer?
What if you spent all your time and money on ONE traffic source which happens to be the one destined to fail?
I made that mistake too many times and suffered significant loss after huge successes. Took years to rebuild.
So listen to Uncle Jim…
