Great class and amazing turn-out the other day for the HTML Webinar.
From the feedback, even people who had HTML experience got many
golden nuggets for landing page design and sales pages.
Today I’d like to change direction…
I was watching the X Factor Arabic Edition last night; an
amateur talent music contest.
One of the judges gave the best singer of
the show the following RETARDED advice:
analytical. When you’re singing, I can see you calculate everything. You’re
always calculating, calculating. You have to let yourself go and sing how you
In marketing too, I see trainers telling their students to
write “naturally” and not to focus on technique and to “be themselves”.
This advice is not only useless, but it’s also WRONG. And
How does one do anything “naturally” if it’s not something
they already know how to do?
Like, if you can’t ride a bike, how do you just ride without
falling? If you can’t drive stick, how do you drive with “confidence” without
calculating every gear change?
The first step in learning anything is to learn it
mechanically, be fully analytic about it, and practice over and over until it
becomes natural. THEN and only then can you “let yourself go”. Confidence comes
only when a process is automatic.
Only practice can give you that.
Earlier today, I was listening to one of the sections of the
YaghiLabs Internet Business Academy training…it was on the topic of Creating
Irrational Behaviour with images.
The interview was with our design expert, who’s been in the game some 20 years. In the interview, I mentioned that the angle
and placement of the Huffington Post’s Cover Story always somehow forces you to
want to scroll and read the article.
“Of course. We feel like we’re missing out on something when
photos are taken this way. And we scroll to make sure we’re not missing out.”
A revelation indeed!
But here’s the thing, if you KNOW the technique in the first
place, you’ll naturally take or pick photos for your website and place them in
a way that evokes curiosity every time. You’ll do it quickly and automatically.
On the other hand, if you JUST learned the technique, you’d
spend several hours finding and placing the perfect photo that fits all the
criteria. You’d be super analytic and calculating about it.
And in the end, you’d have sporadic and slightly less success.
But what would happen if you never studied the Internet
Business Academy and never learned the technique?
You’d be natural at picking photos that suck and placing
them in places that would HINDER your ability to sell.
I think this is one of the most powerful techniques to
create irrational curiosity in prospects. You should learn and apply it
mechanically over and over…and then eventually, you’ll be a “natural”.
But you have to KNOW the technique first.
