Best Ideas Might Seem Stupid?

I’m fascinated with Steve Wozniak. The guy is brilliant.

In a TEDx talk, he tells a story that when he was a kid, he dreamed of owning a computer. His dad told him a computer costs as much as a house! He said, that’s ok, i’ll live in an apartment.

Woz taught himself electronic design with a pen and paper and spent his 10,000 hours of experience pouring over paper circuits. He says, “If you read the same books as everyone else, they’ll pat you on the back and call you clever, you’ll get straight A’s. But that’s all.”

He learned by figuring things out for himself. By the time he was in college, he was the top engineer at HP, without a college degree!

Doing things differently is important for creating true success.

For years, i’ve gone against the grain because i don’t swallow the same dogma as the rest of this industry.

I don’t buy products from marketers.

I don’t subscribe to their mailing lists.

I don’t read copywriting books.

I don’t attend their webinars.

HECK! I don’t even know their names any more. Nor do i give a shit.

When i want to learn something, i learn it on my own by figuring it out for myself…using tools and knowledge from completely different fields.

For instance, when developing a landing page, i find i benefit from what i learned from my designer friends, and the inspiration i drew from successful app websites, like that of Trello.

Trello inspired my first iteration of the Hybrid Page….now the ONLY kind of landing page i ever use.

The Apple Human Interface Guidelines is my bible for building sales websites, presentations, emails, and everything in between.

When you do what i do, most people will actually think your ideas are CRAZY. They would never work. They’ll dismiss you. They’ll even laugh and think you don’t know what you’re doing.

But that’s ok.

According to Brian Chesky, the CEO of AirBnB…worth some 42 BILLION! He says, you should never be afraid anyone will steal your ideas. If they’re any good, most people will think they’re crazy and dismiss them.

Years ago, i was talking with a colleague i looked up to, about how i was thinking about focusing on selling technical competency to my marketing audience.

He said, i mean, yeah, that nichey stuff you could probably make a nice small income for yourself with it.

A few days later, he came back excited, DUDE! You might be onto something BIG! He’d discovered a Udemy course teaching Python programming to NON-techs, which had earned between 15-50 MILLION in sales revenue.

But i already knew this. lol.

I’d successfully sold training like 90 Minute App, 90 Minute HTML, and Communicology to marketers who loved these ideas and bought in swarms. And more recently, the Business Command Centre, High Volume Email Sending, and the Sleeping Giant…equally popular among MARKETERS.

So i’d suggest looking OUTSIDE marketing and expand your horizons. Your best market is NOT marketers. Your best product is not a marketing product.

Distinguish yourself.

Find your edge by reading books that others aren’t reading. Be brave. Learn by figuring things out.
