Their voices echo in your head…
Your family thinks you’re a dumbass, throwing your life and money away. Ignoring them isn’t working. How do you neutralise their smelly voices?
hang on a tick, here’s an illustrative story…
In Dubai, i once led a prayer at a small gas station mosque. My friend suggested i lead, because, well, leaders don’t volunteer, they’re chosen.
Plus, i memorised much of the Quran and he said my voice is better than his (i was classically trained).
We started out two. But as i concluded the opening verses, i heard a chorus behind me say, “AAaaaaaaaamen”.
I realised many others had joined us. I panicked!
When i’m nervous, i forget. So for the next part, i read a few verses from a chapter i knew well (Al-Qamar). I memorised this chapter when i was a child and i’ve been reciting it since.
All the same, the pressure got to me. I forgot a verse and paused, embarrassed, waiting for someone behind me to help. Unfortunately, nobody else knew this chapter by heart.
I backtracked and repeated. The momentum and rhythm jogged my memory, and i was able to complete the prayer to its end.
When i turned, i found myself leading a room full of men.
Most enjoyed the prayer. However, one annoyed worshiper, retorted loudly, “Word of advice, next time you lead, read something ya know!”
I thanked him politely and never led a prayer again.
You too will have merciless, relentless critics while building your online business.
But consider why people criticise.
Mostly, it comes from a place of SPITE, jealousy, or malice.
The mean man in the prayer was not trying to help. Maybe he wanted me to choose a “traditional” chapter like most people who would have led the prayer in that room. Few Muslims memorise more than a handful of easy verses from the end of the Quran.
Maybe he was jealous that a young feller was leading the prayer so competently, with precise adherence to the rules of recitation.
Your work from home and doing business online is still a foreign idea. Turning your back on the traditional makes you an outcast.
Critics will come at you HARD. Most are not interested in helping, they WANT you to fail. So if you don’t fortify yourself, you will be filled with fear, which will lead to failure.
Even from within the industry, you’ll have critics if you do something outside the status quo.
I’ve been laughed at by a mentor…for building a landing page that was KILLING IT…just because my headline was too “tame”. My team and i became the blacksheep of the industry, when we created a movement condemning and exposing the rampant fraud in the market. They warned our clients to disassociate because we were poison. Heck, i’ve been banned from speaking at events…people walked out disgusted…when i did non-traditional stuff that entertained and informed and profited.
Few who give critical advice are actually TRYING to help you.
Even those with helpful motives, like your spouse, parents, or close friends, are often WRONG. They’re imposing their reality onto you…their limitations, assumptions, and priorities. They’re waiting for your “inevitable” failure, so they can say they told you so.
Of course, none of this is to say you should reject ALL criticism as unfounded. Because even if you don’t like it and it is malicious, sometimes it also comes from a place of TRUTH.
You should be confident that what you’re doing is right for you.
