one, you can take to the bank.
When I send
out marketing emails, sometimes a subscriber writes back just to tell me I’m
cool.
Like this guy
about yesterday’s “Killed in Traffic” email:

“I don’t reply to many emails but this one I
had to. I enjoyed this very much and it made me pause. Thank you so much for
this.
“If this was on a blog I would post it to
Facebook.”
How kind!
But this
subscriber reminded me of a crucial lesson for YOU.
A brilliant copywriter friend of mine–He noticed that every time he posted a new blog
entry, he got PLENTY of virtual “applause”.
His
subscribers were happy to hit that “like” button and left many praise-filled
comments. Which made him feel cool for a while.
But soon he became frustrated.
For all the
applause he got, very few people were responding with their wallets.
Ben and I kept
on his case until we convinced him to change how he did things. Finally, he listened
and his problem was fixed.
Now it’s
your turn to learn.
Look, I don’t
deny that producing good free content is a good strategy for selling successfully
online. Blog entries, email followup, video series, webinars.
But it’s
only part of the sales equation.
The problem
with good free content is that you get plenty of virtual applause. You also get
swiped, copied, and imitated.
Very little
of this love translates to any serious traffic.
And even
less translates to real MONEY.
The solution?
Your fellow-subscriber
told you, unknowingly, at the end of his email:
“If this was on a blog, I would post it to Facebook.”
Aha!
DON’T post promo content on your blog!
Your free
content is promotional. It’s a clever, under-cover sales pitch.
If you want
people to respond with their wallet, then DON’T give
them the option to respond by sharing on Facebook.
Enabling
share buttons and comments is like saying, “Hey, I accept cash or applause”.
Likes,
shares, and praise are MUCH cheaper than money.
And they’re
bound to be everyone’s preferred form of payment.
But is it
enough for you?
If not, and you want your promotional content to translate to profit, then the first thing you do is
call it what it is:
FOLLOW UP.
…Follow-up
doesn’t belong on a blog.
…It is NOT accompanied by share buttons.
…It is NOT open for commentary.
You Email
it.
