while practicing for the German driving license exam, i came across this mind-twister…
“you drive round a bend once at 30km/h and again at 60 km/h. how does the centrifugal force change?”
the correct answer…and i swear this is true…is explained in the exam prep app like this:
“If the speed is doubled, the centrifugal force increases fourfold. The formula for the calculation is as follows:
F = m x ((v x v) / r) (F = centrifgual force; m = vehicle mass; v = speed; r = curve radius).”
is this a one-off?
hellz nawww! there’s a ton of these babies with complicated calculations, formulas, numbers, and rules to memorise.
you’d think German drivers are all physicists or mathematicians, right? and by GOOOOOODD they must be aamaaaaazing drivers.
nope.
despite the difficulty of their exam, many don’t follow the rules and i count them as the worst drivers i’ve seen. and i’ve driven in many countries.
here’s my theory…
there’s only one way to pass the exam: to memorise the correct answers to the 1,500-odd practice questions.
that’s what everyone does.
because it’s easier to memorise the correct answer to questions like the one above than to understand the underlying safety message behind them.
and even if you understand the science, you’re unlikely to make such a complicated calculation on the road, in practice.
in online marketing, i see this all the time.
trainers come up with so many “rules of thumb” for very specialised situations only they have experienced. this makes what they’re teaching you more complex and hard to implement for a working result in practice.
some of this is innocent, because not everyone who’s teaching is a good teacher.
but other times, it’s deliberate.
i once recall a very recognisable name in Google advertising saying how by making a subject more complex, people will buy its training products from you.
however, like with the driving exam, lots of rules don’t actually make anyone good at anything
something i’ve always strived to do is to find a handful of core principles–simple, intuitive ideas–that drive my method. and i use those.
which is why, instead of telling you a bunch of “tricks” and rules, i rather give you a strategy and then show you step by step, with real-world examples, how to apply it.
not only is this easier to follow, but it also equips you with a way to reason about your own specific situations, present and future.
if this interests you and you’d like to build your business online with my help, i’ll show you how.
