It’s hard to resist a “bargain”…
But discounts don’t necessarily mean you get one.
Like on Black Friday, when you expect the best bargains on
electronics, Apple decides to give gift cards on their products instead of
Some may see this as a bargain and even go so far as to calculate
the gift-card value as a percentage of saving…
Truth is, you save NOTHING. Instead, you spend far more than
you ever intended to.
Retailers don’t offer discounts because they want to make
LESS money. They do it to make MORE money from people who wouldn’t normally be
buying that day.
And people love nothing more than a sale.
It gives them the perfect excuse to justify spending.
As an avid student of marketing myself, it always baffles me
to see how consumers who are usually intelligent, careful spenders, will lose
their minds for a measly few dollars of savings.
They fill their shopping cart with product, and buy things
they never REALLY needed, fully convinced they’re being smart shoppers.
My wife used to say to me, “Jim, there’s a 25% discount at
so-and-so, shall we go?”
“Let’s not. We’ll save 100% :)”
Sales are for poor people.
Don’t get me wrong–it’s not like I wouldn’t take advantage
of a bargain if I actually needed something and my timing coincided with a
But I don’t go to the shops BECAUSE there’s a sale.
Retailers don’t get to order me around like that and tell me
what to buy and when.
When I need something I’ll just buy it.
And yeah, I’ll spend a few bucks more on it than if I got it
on sale, but so what?
Truth be told, the shop ain’t running away. It will be there
tomorrow and the day after, and the product will still be there.
And there’s no shortage of shopping holidays–so if you
really care about those few bucks of savings, don’t worry there will surely be
a sale again.
But here’s the thing…
When the time comes and you actually NEED that thing, you
won’t mind paying a few bucks more for it. It’s smarter than buying something
you don’t need…
…with money you don’t have…
…so you can save $10 you were NOT going to spend.
When I use the label “poor”, I don’t mean to group people by
their bank balance.
I’m labeling them by their BRAINS, their money-smarts. By
this definition, most people on the planet are “poor”. They know neither how to
manage nor handle money.
But what about you?
You, my friend, are an entrepreneur.
And entrepreneurs, even those with empty bank accounts, in
my eyes are infinitely RICHER and smarter than anyone else.
A dollar in the hands of the average consumer is a dead-end.
Money flows in one direction only–outward. Consumed.
But the entrepreneur…to him a dollar in hand is a seed.
When he saves–he saves his money so he can pour it into growth.
When he spends–he INVESTS his money into growth.
So yeah, I’ll spend $1000 bucks a day on traffic when I COULD
get crap traffic for free.
I’ll hire a copywriter for $10,000 when I COULD hire an
amateur for $1000.
I’ll buy a shopping cart service for $300/month when I COULD
get a lower plan for $99.
I’ll buy a dedicated website server for $500/month when I COULD
get shared hosting for $3.
But I won’t buy no frikkin iPhone 6, just because Apple’s
giving out $50 gift cards.
