A Decision Learned At Childhood That's Keeping Them Poor

I spent a few years in Saudi Arabia when my dad was a translator for the US Embassy there.
Was only a little kiddo, so I loved me a good bedtime story. The books I had in Saudi were mainly based around the Arabian Nights – you know, Sindbad, Aladdin, Ali Baba…that kind of thing.
Anyway, I used to get so frustrated!
In all the genie stories they’re allowed 3 wishes, right? But all the time they wished for dumb stuff.

I would say, “Mum, if I ever found a magic lamp, the first thing I would wish for is MORE WISHES”.

Ok, so I was probably not the first kid to ever say that.
But I’ve noticed a pattern in how rich and poor make decisions. From major life-altering decisions to tiny buying decisions.

The difference is…Their PRIORITIES.

A poor person with a dollar spends it quickly on whatever it can buy: a soft-drink, a game of “spacies”, a loaf of bread.
A rich-minded person with a dollar has a plan; he buys a tool: a hunting knife, an education, a book.

In the bedtime stories about magic lamps and genies…

The main character is always poor.
He’s quick to use all his wishes on things he’s been deprived of. And he NEVER gives much thought to the future.
Ultimately, his wishes run out though.

BROKE-minded people always choose instant joy first… knowing pain and hardship will follow.

RICH-minded people first take the pain….and are prepared to delay their pleasure so it’s bigger later.

Why?
BROKE-minded people see pain and hardship as defaults. pleasure is a one-off occasion to be enjoyed while it’s available. Before life goes back to sucking.
RICH-minded people, on the other hand, aspire to permanent joy and comfort. We see pain and hardship as a temporary but necessary evil. After a year, two, or ten, life will be much sweeter.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve experienced hardship and pain throughout my life –

  • We’ve been refugees. We’ve been deported.
  • I’ve worn ugly ass flea-market GIRL sandals to Middle School,
  • Froze my ass off walking 40 minutes in rain to and from High School,
  • Lived in a tiny unfurnished no window apartment while at University,
  • Busted my back hunched at the computer programming and building businesses,
  • Gone weeks without sleep
  • Been F**K’D on by slimy business associations.

Lost it all…and came back higher than I’ve ever been.

Was it worth it? Ohhhhh yeeaaaahhhh!

How about you – Do you make rich or poor decisions?

Be honest. Do you choose instant pleasure even if pain follows later?
Or do you endure extended periods of hardship – because you strive for the greater joy that follows?
