4.2 Bil ad budget, and NONE for you little Facebook!

Let’s get right back
on track.
Let’s rag some more on Facebook. (Note to self, create a new email series called The Facebook Rag-Sesh)
At my granny’s funeral,
I got into a chat with a relative who actually reads my emails! *GASP!*
Yes, I couldn’t
believe it either.
To you, I get to say a lot of
stuff that i’ll never be accountable for because we’re likely to never see each other in person. (Sucked in haha.)
But i can’t hide behind my writing when the subscriber is also a relative.
We’re bound to meet at some point. And this was the case at the funeral.
He said, “I’m keeping
up with your emails and they’re all very good – although lately they have a lot
of swearing.”
So this is
I mean I guess I do
swear a bit. But i digress…
The relative and I discussed
one email I wrote recently where I spoke of Facebook’s pay-per-click platform
being lame for business.
“Did you know that
General Motors withdrew their Facebook advertising recently?” he asked.
I didn’t.
Interestingly, I verified
it and found that General Motors, the third largest advertiser in the US,
who spends around 40 milllion buckeroo’s /yr on Facebook advertising alone..
… announced
they’d withdraw all their Facebook paid advertising!
Now this might sound
like a lot. But according to the story, only 10 mil $ pays for Facebook traffic,
while 30 mil $ pays their content managers.
Oh yeah, did I not mention
that you can’t just DRIVE traffic without having content to drive it to?
But keep in mind, GM
spends 4.7 BILLLION annually on advertising.
So really what is 10
mil to them?
But their new head of
marketing is working on leaning up their ad budget so they’d only spend money
where there is effective ROI.
Meanwhile, Sir Martin
Sorrell, CEO of the world’s largest advertising holding group (WPP), says he
has fundamental doubts about the long-term ability to monetize ANY of the recent social
And I tend to agree.
Social platforms aren’t
the right place for our advertising messages – they interrupt people’s conversations.
And nobody likes the
dick who keeps interrupting their fun.
Although they might
look in his direction out of curiosity before they decide he’s an idiot. And on
Facebook, that’s done with clicks that cost money and make back little.
Which is exactly why I
will never stop telling you…
Use search-based
advertising FIRST. Don’t count on social traffic as a primary advertising avenue for your business.
I mean, search-advertising is the
greatest invention ever.
Before search-advertising, mass media marketing
was out of the league of the little guy.
Now that we have search-based
ads, your “little guy” business page pops up in the exact moment someone is
looking for a solution you can offer..
…and it costs so little that ANY little guy can
afford it.
And take a page from
GM’s book here –
They have 4.2 billlion
to spend on ads. You don’t.
Yet they decided to
redirect their ad spending to where it was most productive and gave the best bang for their fat buck.
While I’m not sure that
search-based marketing is where GM is redirecting their internet ad dollars – but YOUR ad dollars?
They are
better spent on search marketing.
And the good news is
