To Segment or Not to Segment?

Don’t you
love unsolicited advice?
I get my
fair share–and I don’t like it any more than the next guy.
Check out
this message:

My
response?
“Take your
own advice. I don’t need it.”
Lol.
If you’re
shocked that I would intentionally “risk” losing a subscriber for no apparent
reason, then you probably think leads are hard to come by.
They’re
not.
I do in
fact segment my customers. And I send them relevant material WHEN it makes
sense.
But I intentionally
DON’T want to cut my customers off from seeing the promotional messages for a product
they’ve already bought.
Why?
Because…
1. The promo emails only make a gentle pitch
at the
end– it’s not the focus of my emails, and customers realize that.
2. Promo emails may sell non-buyers, but
they also push existing buyers to go through the material if they haven’t yet (many
never get around to consuming the training if they don’t keep seeing these messages).
3. My promo emails often add insight and
examples to the training material customers own (in other words, they get more value
from the product)
4. and it saves me from writing 20 emails a
day–while still maintaining a meaningful relationship with my customers.
This last
one is a biggie.
I run an
online business largely because I enjoy being independent.
And I try
to minimize my work, not increase it.
But you’re still
wondering why I responded in this “unprofessional” way.
Simple…
Independence
to me, means I’m not constrained by someone else’s rules.
And nowhere
in MY Rule Book does it say that I have to be polite to anyone who bugs me.
If I don’t
like someone, I want them out of my life.
I don’t
want them to get my training. And I don’t want to help them succeed. I’m a
vindictive prick. Yeah.
So I’ll write
curt, “unprofessional” responses to anyone who rubs me the wrong way.
Not because
I’m clueless…but if someone’s being a dickhead, I want to revoke the privilege
of access to me.
With you, I
share my most intimate ideas and thoughts.
I think
about you EVERY DAY.
And I spend
a great deal of time coming up with useful things to tell you and creating products to help you succeed.
Most of my customers know how hard I work for
them.
The way I see
it, I can ONLY do this as a labour of love if I like my customers and care about them.
But I can
only do that if I consistently keep the dickheads out of my circle.
How is this
even relevant to you?
Well, if
you value your own knowledge and independence like me, you don’t want to be
censored or enslaved to dumb rules you don’t make.
I also
realize that not everyone has the luxury to kick leads out without losing a
wink of sleep.
After all, getting
new traffic, subscribers, and customers is something I have an easier time
doing than most people.
But it IS easy…
..if you
want to have the freedom to choose who you surround yourself with…
…If you
want to only deal with people you like…
…and if you
want to run your business on your own terms…
