Broke the Black Magic Adwords Curse

Superstition
in internet marketing cracks me up.
Nothing like
Google Adwords to bring out the crazy in us.
But can you
imagine running Google traffic to a landing page that has NOTHING but a Video
Sales Letter…
Autoplays
on arrival.
Black text
on white background.
And 45 mins
of narration?
Surely
that’s not compliant.
…Or is it?
The “make
money from home” industry has looked to Adwords as this incredibly complex, yet
powerful traffic generator.
Some people
think you need a PhD to operate it…
Others say you
need to be a “numbers” person…
But most just
think Adwords is BLACK MAGIC, dead set to put a curse on them.
Me?
I believe it’s
an incredibly SIMPLE system…
…Complicated
only by our own disbelief.
Here’s what
I mean.
Last night,
I had the good fortune of speaking to Adwords staff about campaign strategy.
A friend of
mine had just launched a new campaign in the “privacy and anti-surveillance”
niche. And it wasn’t running. So I thought I’d ask my account manager to see
what’s up and get the site reviewed while at it.
My friend was
worried he had a compliance issue…
He didn’t.
There was a problem with his billing profile. No biggie. Easily fixed.
But what’s
interesting to me is this…
People often
ask me to show them examples of Google Compliant Landing Pages. And when I do,
they go off and imitate the look and feel of that single page and think they’re
set.
They run a
Google campaign and get banned anyway.
Why?
Because
Adwords compliance is NOT about how your page LOOKS.
It’s not even
about a SINGLE page.
I digress
though…
Back to my
girl at Google. So I asked her to review my friend’s landing page and see if
she can identify any issues.
Although I sent
her the landing page…the first thing she did was visit the site home-page. Followed
very quickly by the Contact Page.
I shit you
not.
Within
minutes she was critiquing the Product’s page.
The landing
page was the LAST thing she looked at. And she was purely looking at everything
from a usability and conversions point of view. Never once did she even mention
Google policy.
It’s just
like I’ve always told you guys…
Running a
“compliant” adwords campaign is not about some technical thing you do…a
cleverly placed link here or there. Some specific language on top of your
opt-in box….or a certain type of page.
It’s not
about these things.
It’s about
running a legitimate business website.
A website that
has products to sell and doesn’t try to hide it.
A website
that has a way for customers to get in touch with the business…
A business that’s
clear about what it wants from its visitors and why.
Stuff that
SHOULD be easy for honest people with legitimate businesses to do.
You shouldn’t
be afraid of scrutiny. You should welcome it. It will make you a more effective
marketer, and you’ll enjoy all the traffic Google can send.
