It’s for the lonely-hearted.
It’s for you who don’t want to get out of
bed today. For you who wish you could “skip” forward…disappear from the linear
timeline…not exist for a little while. For you who can’t wait for the holiday
to be over.
I know your pain. I’ve survived times so
broke there was no food to eat. And I took it in all in stride, big smile
pasted on my face. I was a rock. It drove me harder.
But another holiday spent alone…
Well, let’s say this…no man or woman is
more broke than one without a family of their own.
And I don’t mean relatives either–Father.
Mother. Brother and sister.
I’m talking about not having your OWN
family–a wife, a husband, a child.
You may not think of “family” as a measure
of a person’s wealth…
But when you take stock of your life and
your accomplishments, no matter how much money you have…
No matter how many degrees on your wall…
No matter how high up in your company you
On a day like today, you will think of the friends
your age, people who grew up around you, people who started the same place you
…and in that moment, when you’ve finished
keeping yourself busy with your work and your full social life that runs into
the wee hours of the morning, until you can barely keep your eyes open…and you
walk into your empty home…
When you peel off your clothes, right down
to your underwear…
When you fill that bowl with cereal…
Before you’ve turned on the television to
drown out the silence….
You can’t help but feel a twinge of JEALOUSY.
Relax. It’s perfectly natural.
Of course you feel like you’re “behind”
even when you’ve got everything else.
Family is something we all need.
It’s how you “immortalize” your legacy.
My advice for 2014?
Go out and meet someone. Make a family.
And if you can’t afford to start a family,
then make THAT what drives you.
