sitting in a fancy restaurant …
weirdo starts eating their soup with a fork.
Swear to god
this is a true story.
day, my wife and I decided to have breakfast at this trendy joint downtown.
They do traditional Arabic food and it’s incredible.
This place is
so popular, on weekends the queue runs down the street for blocks.
Lucky it was a quiet morning.
We find a
seat outside and sit to order.
Before I tell
the rest of the story, I have to explain the important role of bread in
Middle Eastern food…
…it’s actually used as an eating utensil!
off a small piece, hold it between three fingers in a triangle shape, then “pinch”
the food into the bread to create a neat little morsel.
proper way to eat Arabic food.
like Asian meals are best eaten with chopsticks and European meals are best
eaten with fork and knife, Arabic food is best eaten with Lebanese bread.
Now I’m not
one to make fun of how someone eats–I think everyone should be allowed to eat

But I couldn’t
help laugh when my wife pointed out the well-dressed Egyptian couple sitting
next to us who were eating their “manakkesh” with fork and knife. Which would
not have been THAT weird, except they soon began eating their “foul” the same
Foul is originally
“poor people food”.
You eat it
with your hands, using bread. And it’s “soup-y”.
What the couple did was like an
Asian guy trying to eat miso soup with a fork and knife.
They obviously thought they were being sophisticated and classy. Except it
wasn’t working, they couldn’t eat, and the whole thing looked super dumb.
And I’d not
have laughed if they were non-Arabs…except they were speaking the Egyptian dialect
and Foul is Egypt’s national dish!
This got me
thinking about some of the marketers subscribed to my emails.

dreaming that they’re going to get rich selling their pointless ebook of
And I’m not
picking on these guys, honestly.
But I feel
sorry for them, because they’re always doing really inconvenient, unnatural
stuff, bending over backwards to keep up the appearance of success…
And the effort is all waste. No one believes it.
I think you should be true to yourself.
