Do you ever feel this sense of despair and overwhelm…
All the things on your plate that have to get done before
you can get your online business up and running?
I know there’s a lot of moving parts to having a great
business website that gets traffic and sales. And it can be frightening…like it’s
such a HUGE undertaking, far greater than you ever expected…so many things left
Will you even be able to finish?
I know the feeling, because believe it or not, I’ve felt it
But I’ve overcome overwhelm and I’d like to pass on my
experience to you.
See, a few months ago, i set a big personal goal.
I decided to memorise the entire Quran by heart.
The Quran is the Muslim holy book. And like any religious
text, it’s written in an old language that’s not always easy to read.
In fact, the Quran is in Arabic, which is neither a language
I speak natively nor one I read well.
However, if I spell out the words one letter at a time, like
a pre-schooler, I can kinda read it.
There’s a total of 6,236 verses. Some span a couple of words
only while other verses span an entire page of uninterrupted text.
To memorise means to store to memory and repeat verbatim,
word for word, without a single error.
If you’ve ever memorized something, you’ll understand how
difficult this is…and to do it in an old dialect of a language you can barely
speak…it’s a pretty huge undertaking!
But I decided to memorise the entire Quran–No deadline. Just
“sometime before I die”.
I don’t have photographic memory.
In fact, my memory is not great.
I just repeat over and over, test myself, repeat, test, and
I memorise in the car. I memorise when I’ve got dead time. I
memorise to fall asleep at night.
And sometimes, I’ll get really excited about how well I’m
doing as I come to the end of a section or a chapter.
Other times, I’ll look at how much is left and feel like I’ve
Over the past four months, I’ve actually memorized roughly
830 verses, between 10%-15% of the entire text. Not bad, right?
Now someone else may not even get the balls to start such an
undertaking. It’s just TOO big.
But I used a method that i learned in business…and it keeps
your motivation extremely high.
I use this method to write daily emails–to build giant traffic
campaigns–to create new products.
Here’s what you do:
First, decide there’s no deadline on your goal.
Deadlines don’t motivate. They frustrate.
One thing I hate about people who obsessively plan is how
they set deadlines on goals. You can plan how you go about accomplishing
something, but NOT how long it takes. There’s no way to know.
Don’t put a deadline. Just have a big dream and a plan to
get to it.
Break your goal into small steps. And if the steps are too
big, break them down even more. Keep breaking down the goal to the point the
steps don’t even make sense to anyone but you.
For me, sometimes I’d memorise an entire page in one sitting…sometimes
it’s a single verse…or even part of a verse…some hard word or combination that I
just can’t even pronounce. Doesn’t both me.
The only requirement you should ever place on yourself is
that you move forward. Even if it’s a tiny teeny weeny step.
When you want motivation, don’t look ahead at what’s left to
do, look behind at what you’ve done.
In the early days, looking ahead at how much work is left to
do…well it kills your motivation. Makes you feel like whatever you’ve done is
so little and pathetic in the greater scheme of things
But it’s not.
See any big goal is started with the first step.
And every worthwhile thing is built up, little by little,
every day until it’s some brilliant accomplishment that gives you pride.
What most people lack is the vision to stay with something
unformed and build it day in and day out.
And that’s why, they may laugh at you and call you crazy–they
just don’t see it. But when you achieve your dream and they see it fully formed–they
can’t help but stand in awe of you.
You can do it…and all those doubters, your friends and
You’ll be their hero, like I am yours today (hehe).
This approach, I taught to my Traffic KickStart students so
they can build up big traffic. You see, they write just 4 ads every day…every single
day. At first it doesn’t seem like much, but in a month…they have 120 ads.
In 3 months, they have 360 ads…you get the picture.
And each ad brings more people.
More traffic. And more sales.
You really have to try it to experience the feeling.
