What is it with forums and online marketers?
There’s too many “chiefs” and not enough “Indians”. Everyone
wants to appear like they know what they’re talking about, but mostly there’s a
lot of TERRIBLE advice.
Take for instance, this poor frustrated guy who asked:

Lots of people try advertising with Pay Per Click (PPC) more
than once and keep having a bad experience with it.
Probably because they’re
getting their advice from forums like this guy did.
Check it out:
One guy tells him to stay away from PPC. His advice: “Do
Solo Ads instead.”
Solo Ads are good for a quick burst of (usually) expensive traffic, but it’s always hit and miss with the people selling you Solo Ads.
Basically, you have to kiss
a lot of frogs to find a prince.
The pricing structure of Solo Ads is always on the
basis of the number of people who MIGHT see your ad.
Meaning, you pay for the POTENTIAL of the audience size who may (or may not) visit
your site. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get a single actual visit to your
site…but you could pay thousands to try and find out.
PPC isn’t like that.
If a gajillion people see your ad and you don’t get a single
visitor, you pay ZERO. NOTHING. Not even a placement fee.
Potential is meaningless on PPC.
You ONLY pay when someone who is
interested in your ad clicks it.
Another guy who seems to (*sarcasm*) REALLY know all about
PPC, responds at length with 3 major bits of advice:
* Don’t use Broad
* Don’t use Display
* Write ads that
get high Click-Thru-Rate so your click cost goes down
WOAH. What a trail of regurgitated horsedung.
The first two points are basically saying “choke the ad
network from showing your ad to too many people”.
The last point contradicts everything before it: “Write ads
that get clicked as much as possible.”

Why wouldn’t you want as MANY people as possible to SEE your
ad, since “lookers” are free?
You’re more likely to find a big group of buyers in a large audience
than in a small one.
And if expense is your concern, don’t stress. Just write ads that get clicked ONLY by people who are prepared to buy.
One or two words in an ad are usually enough to turn off just about everyone,
except a buyer.
Makes more sense too.
Look, I don’t blame these guys for not knowing any better. The
whole industry’s been taught to do this silly stuff.
It’s because they treat PPC as if it was Solo Ads…with an extra feature of fine-grain “targeting”.
If you’re not familiar with Solo Ads…then like lots of really niche newspapers, with very small readership.
Their way can work. But it’s all uphill and requires intimate knowledge of which kinds of people buy BEFORE you go advertise.
Which is why only someone with experience can make that PPC method profitable.
Most of us don’t really know which sub, sub, group of our audience tend to buy…in order to target them.

I mean, if any of these guys dishing out advice were generating
serious traffic and sales…
do you think they’d be flexing their virtual muscles for free in a forum full of newbies…
