In a recent traffic coaching class, I was demonstrating how the
students could use an Excel template I built to estimate traffic cost and expected
revenue. In my example, I wrote $1000/month ad budget… just as an example.
Suddenly, one of the attendee interjected:
“Jim, I don’t have a 1,000 dollar ad budget. I’m actually robbing
Peter to pay Paul. Isn’t there a way for me to build up to $1,000 ad budget
Maybe this surprises you…
But I wasn’t always a traffic expert, milllionaire businessman.
Years ago, when I was a poor PhD student, I was receiving a
measly $18,000/year scholarship.
It hurts to remember those days…
When i had to dig under my car seat for coin change to see
if I could find enough to buy a loaf of bread for dinner. I figured if I could
just get bread, I might be able to fry up my withered, blackened onion in the last
drips at the bottom of the oil bottle… and I could have dinner.
It had been so long since i’d seen $1,000 in one go, I had no idea what it
But broke as I was, I built a successful web business. And
let me tell you something else…
I never had a ZERO ad budget.
From the day I decided to build a business online, in those horrible days, I knew
there was really no way to do it without spending a few bucks on advertising. So
I made a deal with myself to take out $50 from my scholarship every month
before I paid a single bill, before I even thought about paying rent…
And i set out to figure out how to turn $50 into $100.

Here’s what happened…
Within days, I had my first sale – which I re-invested into
buying a little more traffic.
While many business owners would see limitations on capital
investment as a curse, it can actually be a blessing in disguise.
It forces you to become creative, careful, and smart.
Case in point, in those days, I was always looking for ways
to streeeeetch my tiny ad dollars, milked out of my veins. And no matter how few leads I generated,
I valued every single one. I gave them personal time and made myself available on
many communication channels, including phone.
And this led me to discover a “viral traffic” addition which
multiplied my total leads by almost 10 overnight.
It was amazing!
Within 3 months I became the #1 affiliate for a major online
publisher. Out of tens of thousands of affiliates, I was generating 90% of their
total traffic and earning 10’s of thousands in commissions.
This led to a publishing gig which made milllions in sales. And
soon big businesses were trying to recruit me to advertise for them.
See, where there is a will, there’s a way.
So stop saying you have no advertising budget. Every business
starts as an idea. If you believe in it, you can raise money and grow it.
A business’s job is not to create money from thin air…it
GROWS little money into more money.
