My traffic guy hollered
at me for advice.
One of our clients needed
to change the landing page for a campaign we’re managing.
Now you won’t know
Nothing is more
frustrating for a traffic consultant than finding out about changes made by
someone else to the website they’re marketing….MID WAY through a controlled,
scientific marketing experiment.
Control is a big part
of what we do.
We have strict
processes for when changes can and should be made. And we hate when someone
else makes them without our knowledge.
So why was my traffic
guy in a fix?
On one hand, the client
has every right to ask him to make changes he needs.
But on the other, what
the client wanted would get the entire campaign we’re managing shut down and
removed from the ad network for non-compliance, maybe permanently.
Clients often get in
the way of us doing our work. And they can’t tell the difference between
problems caused by them…and things that are genuinely our responsibility, which
of course we should be accountable for.
The landing page he
wanted to use was not of our design. He wanted to replace our page with his.
But it had all the
usual holes typical of landing pages in our industry; the stuff that keeps most
marketers unable to get traffic from Ad Networks like Google, Bing, and

this at the time, but the fella he swiped from is ALSO my client!
unknowingly swiped the copy from me.
I actually built and wrote the page he swiped
from. Even though it was for a famous copywriter, who is very capable of
writing his own landing page copy, the COPYWRITER entrusted me with the job because
he knew only I could make his website compliant for Google’s traffic.
But here’s the thing…
The page we developed
for the swipe-y client, the one he wanted to replace with his …it was built specifically
for his business and product. And it was designed to be compliant with major ad
His new page used swiped
copy from a whole different industry, and an inferior, non-compliant page of
his own creation.
This is what I love to
hate about our industry.
The swiping and
copying and duplicating. Mish-mashing, hacking, and assembling incompatible
bits and pieces with other incompatible bits and pieces.
It’s REMARKABLE how
hard it is for people to just be UNIQUE.
They can’t see how embarrassing
and how ineffective it is to copy.
Unique doesn’t have to
be a difficult concept though.
You look at your
market, see what everyone else is doing…and do what they’re NOT doing.
