Which Psychic Skills are WRONG for Traffic

Some questions just
make no sense.
Unless maybe if I were
psychic…
Then again, I wouldn’t
bother making a career with my traffic and marketing skills. I’d just get a
show on the Psychic Network.
These two, i get
often…and they
BUG THE HECK OUTTA ME:
“How much traffic can I get with this budget?”
“Will I be able to make back my investment in
a month?”
These are silly
questions that indicate a serious lack of business savvy.
Without expense and
revenue data, short of a fortune-teller, no one can tell you how much money
you’ll make. Live with it.
I could, of course,
give you some “piss in the wind” guarantee just to close a sale. But that would
be irresponsible – because you’re going to pay the advertising expense whether
I get you the promised result or not.
Even if I offered
refunds on my fees (I don’t).
Either way, you’re not
going to be very happy.
Look…
If you have a business
that is already being advertised on the internet and it brings traffic and
sales, and you ask for a projection on what can be done to improve it…
I could give you a
very educated guess.
For instance, I could
look at your website and see you have 30,000 hits a month that only convert to
100 leads a month.
Maybe I’d say, hey I
can give you a 500% improvement overnight…
Because of my
marketing experience, I’d be able to quickly see the elements that are not
intuitive in you website’s design – or i could improve your copy. The result
would be instantaneous and guaranteed.
But too many of my
clients ask the two questions…and they’re very insistent for answers – even
though only a scammer would dare answer!
Inevitably, the people
asking also have ZERO traffic and ZERO sales.
In this case, the best
I can predict is that if I build an advertising campaign for you, you will
start generating traffic and seeing some sale activity.
SOME.
How much?
I don’t know. That is
not information I’m privy to.
This might shock you,
but …
There is no such thing
as an “average” cost per lead that can be expected in any market. *GASP!*
To estimate “how much
traffic you can expect for this budget”, I would need to literally own the
Traffic Network you advertise on.
In which case, I
wouldn’t be selling traffic management. I’d be selling ad space.
But hey, at least I
would have the data necessary to give such estimates honestly. I’d know what my
network’s advertisers spend in all their markets, I’d know how often my users
respond to ads, and I would be able to
calculate an average cost per lead based on that.
But I don’t own an ad
network. I’m a professional advertiser; an experienced CUSTOMER of ad networks.
Which is why people
hire me to manage their traffic, so with my experience i could represent them
on the various ad networks.
Besides, what good
would an AVERAGE be when the range can be so big?
On Ad Networks,
markets are diverse; so even if the average advertiser pays $25/lead – there
will be some who pay $1/lead and others who pay $100/lead.
So if you have a
$3,000 monthly ad budget and you want an estimate of how many leads you can
generate, the ad network might say:
“expect Between 30 –
3000 leads a month.”
Is that information
useful to you?
Nope.
So don’t ask: “How
much traffic can I expect to get with this budget.”
A more useful question
is, “How soon can I expect to see some traffic?”
With me, the answer
will always be “Within 24 hours”.
In this case the main
variables are my experience and knowledge of marketing. Which I know well.
Something else that
may shock you…
There is no such thing
as an average sales rate or revenue. *GASP!*
Someone who sells a
$10 product will have a different sale rate from someone who sells a $5000
product.
But even if there are
two products sold for the EXACT same price, they won’t necessarily have a
comparable sale rate.
Each market is
different.
Each business’
marketing has different effectiveness.
Without knowing the
historic average customer value of YOUR business AND the historic average cost
of acquiring a customer, nobody can tell you how long before you break-even.
The answer will depend
on how much money you end up spending to get the sale. The only person who
knows this is you!
And you’ll only know
the number AFTER you have spent the money and made sales.
Which means, if you
have not generated a sale yet, then the expense is still growing. And the cost
of a customer is still unknown to you.
So if you, the person
who owns the business, doesn’t know the cost of making a sale…how the heck
should I know?
As you can see, these
questions are dead-giveaways that the asker doesn’t understand the fundamentals
of business.
Traffic is NOT a
technical skill of SEO or PPC.
It’s a business skill
of understanding and BALANCING expenses vs revenue.
And this is why I
