I don’t understand how people call themselves “entrepreneur” without asking the simplest question:
“CAN THIS TRAFFIC – AND – THIS PRODUCT GET ME TO MY GOAL?”
It all started yesterday evening, as I raced out of the house to the airport.
I was late. There was a flight I had to catch to Oman and back the same day.
See, I needed to do a “visa run” to renew my status. Thousands of people do this every day– they fly to Oman, Bahrain, or Qatar, turn around, and jump back on the same flight back to Dubai.
Checkin counters close an hour before flights, so I had to get to the airport 2 hours ahead and figure out where to park my rental.
Turns out, I had a little more time than expected. And while waiting at the boarding gate, I called a friend to pass the time.
Right away, he began bitching:
“Jim, I just can’t get traffic. I’ve tried x, y, z…and nothing’s working. I can’t figure out how to make money online.”
After 15 minutes of his complaints and 2 minutes of my suggestions…which he inevitably turned down, I said with impatience:
“Abe, look. You don’t really want traffic.”
“What do you mean?” he asked in shock.
“I got bills on my arse. My mortgage payment’s due at the end of the week, my car payment is due Tuesday, I’m scrambling man. Our savings are nearly finished and my family is counting on me to turn this online thing around. I feel like I’m just locked up in a dark closet and I can’t breathe. Why the hell is it so hard to get traffic?”
So I explained…
“Bro. You don’t want traffic. You want money.”
“Same thing man!” he retorted.
Money and traffic are NOT the same thing.
What anyone desperately seeking immediate big traffic is really looking for …is money ASAP.
And the stupid fugking fools are standing in their own way!
Why not first ask:
“CAN THIS TRAFFIC AND THIS PRODUCT GET ME TO MY GOAL?”
Do a BASIC feasibility study.
Write down the amount of dollars you NEED to have at the end of every month to maintain your current lifestyle. Call that your MINIMUM income level.
With a little simple math, you can quickly figure out:
– how many customers you need every month
– how much each customer should pay you
– and whether or not your minimum is feasible with whatever traffic strategy you choose
I can’t believe I have to tell people this.
Let’s say you need to make 10,000/month as a “minimum”, then…
If your product sells for $1, you have to sell 333 units/day.
If your product sells for $100, you have to sell 33 units/day.
If your product sells for $1,000, you have to sell 1 unit/3 days (or 10 sales a month).
If your product sells for $10,000, you have to sell 1 unit/30 days (1 sale a month).
Look at the SALE FREQUENCY…not the dollar figure.
Decide what you think is realistic for you.
Any of these targets is FEASIBLE…with the right traffic source of course.
Sure, selling a 10,000 dollar product is harder than selling a $1 product.
But generating 100 leads/month and making 1 sale @ $10,000 – ONCE – …
…is helluva lot easier than generating 500 leads/day and selling 333 of them on paying $1.
Choosing a target and planning how to reach it is STEP 0 in getting to a goal quickly.
It lets you know how FAR you have to shoot to reach the goal. Then you can reject anything that’s going to waste your time so you’ll only do efficient stuff.
No sense in me “walking” 1,000km to Oman and back (cost $0) when I know I can do the same with a 4-hour car drive (cost $200: gas, border-passing fee, car insurance, and meals) or a 1-hour plane-trip (cost: $100).
I take the plane. It’s efficient.
Can you get 333 sales PER DAY when you’re growing your traffic at the rate of 2 leads a day? Or even 33 sales @ $100?
It’s NOT feasible.
And you’d be a FOOL to even consider using a lame-o traffic technique like Social Media marketing to get it.
The most I’ve ever heard the TOP social media “gooroo royalty” generate with free social media is like 200 leads a day. Everyone else gets 2-3 leads.
It’s the same with SEO too actually. I’ve never met anyone who gets more than a handful of leads with SEO and I know a lot of so-called SEO experts!
You’re not getting 33 sales/day selling @ $100 with that rate. And you’re not getting 200 leads a day without becoming a wise-ass social media drama queen of some kind.
PPC, on the other hand, the most I heard is 30,000 leads PER DAY. And sure enough, the guy who did it was a total BAD ARSE, and I trained under him years ago.
But even total PPC newbies that I have trained since have been able to generate 200 – 300 leads/day in weeks.
Go look for videos online of people I’ve coached and trained over the years. Prove me wrong.
So maybe with a $100 product you can sell 1000 units a month on Social Media…Maybe.
But me, I’d either sell high-ticket stuff – or – find a HELL OF A LOT better traffic source with greater potential.
The right traffic source for you depends on your GOAL, your budget, and your relationships.
Maybe it is Social Media. Maybe it’s SEO. Maybe it’s PPC.
How would I know? I don’t know you.
