“See, I’ve been looking at what you’re doing and I think you’re in desperate need of change.
“And I’m just the guy to do it.”
This was the opening pitch Don Draper gives to Dow Chemical for why they should hire his advertising agency.
Although Draper is a fictional TV character, his sales pitch echoed a REALLY NON-fictional theme that has always driven me in business.
I always saw the industry’s top leaders while working for them and wondered why their ambition ended so early.
Everyone seemed to have great drive for the milllion $ biz…but no one believed in the reality of the BILLION like I did.
Genius and creativity only seemed to come out in the early stages; in the business’ most difficult and trying times.
(Actually, that’s an incredible realization-
You don’t need a gazillion dollars of seed funding to come up with an awesome business concept.)
But as soon as success comes, these entrepreneurs would become so HAPPY they forget creativity — which put them on top in the first place.
They coast from then on in the “routine”: A launch here. A JV promo there, a sale, a special, anything just to maintain the cash flow at the same level.
Online marketers are the worst about this.
The common dream is to have “auto pilot” income.
And I think that’s a DUMB goal to make.
I mean, what happens out there in the real world?
After a business innovates a thing that takes off, like the iPod or the iPhone or the Facebook…
…your competition learns from your success. They imitate and before long, they’re innovating too. The Galaxy and the Google+.
Without a NEW innovation, you’re no longer special.
As was the case with Dow Chemical.
They claimed to be HAPPY with their current advertising agency (after all, they had a 50% market share!)
But Don’s reply:
“Even though success is a reality, its effects are TEMPORARY.
“You get hungry, even though you’ve already eaten.
“You’re happy because you’re successful. FOR NOW.
“But what IS happiness?
“It’s the moment RIGHT before you need more happiness.”
One of my old clients, a “small” company called Magnetic Sponsoring, i got over 9 milllion people to see my ads every day – and as much as a THOUSAND new subscribers would join them daily from my advertising alone!
But I didn’t stop there –
Because 9 mil wasn’t good enough. I wanted EVERYONE.
