The DEVIL is in the Short-Cut

You know why a lot of people don’t make money online?
It’s short-cut taking.
Me…I’m a bit of a perfectionist you see.
I hate short-cuts. Employees who take them piss me off and get fired.
It’s not that I’m against taking a shorter, more efficient path if it’s there. That would be silly.
But the problem with habitual short-cut takers is that they make careless mistakes in their rush.
I know this contradicts the marketer moto:
“Don’t worry about getting it right, just get it going.”
But carelessness is never a virtue. It costs money and time.
A more useful moto is:
“Do it right the first time, so you don’t lose time in repetition.”
It’s not as sexy but there’s a lot to be said for taking pride in your work.
And if you’re interested in speed, then don’t confuse it with “rush”. Rushing means you do something so quickly it creates a BROKEN result. That’s NOT a short-cut at all.
It’s like trying to take a short-cut to avoid traffic and getting lost for an hour.
You will have to go back and repeat the work you did, over and over. If you’re inexperienced, you don’t really know what short-cuts you can take without being lost until you’ve gone the long way first!
And while achieving a goal may not be in close-enough sight for you to get enjoyment from the result you’re striving for, you actually can enjoy the process along the way.
Most people HATE the process because it is lacking in reward, congested, and filled with pain.
But you can learn to take pleasure in knowing that every detail you add is one that others are unlikely to perceive in isolation.
Rest assured though, your attention and care will be perceived in your final finished product. And it will pay off.
Whether that’s a sales presentation, a traffic campaign, or a product you’re selling.

We’re perfectionists…so you’d be taking the long profitable way, WITHOUT spending the time yourself.
I remember years ago finding a dissection of Darth Vader’s story in Star Wars. And was fascinated by the lengths George Lucas had gone to so that the details of the evil character were ” accurate” to the untold story in his imagination.
Obsessive Fans LOVED the details.
Regular movie watches LOVED the finished movie.
Remember there is a big fight scene where Vader and Skywalker go against each other with Light Sabres. The lightning strikes Vader. His body briefly flashes in X-Ray.
If you pay attention, a number of wounds and artificial limbs show in the X-Ray.
They were part of Vader’s untold history.
Star Wars never told the story of Anakin (aka Vader) until some 15 years later in a prequel…but these tiny details made Star Wars one of the most successful franchise movies of our generation.
Books based on the movie were written.
More merchandise was sold. And a lot more money was made just from details…which at the time of creating Star Wars 1 had no purpose other than ART.
Like many of the greatest businesses of all time, I practice perfection in everything I do and love it.
It has paid off big time.
Like when I was a humble PhD student and the Property Manager would do her six-monthly inspections, I cleaned my rented home with a FINE TOOTH COMB. I wiped the handles on doors, cupboards, and light switches. Dusted down all the surfaces.
I scrubbed the shower-glass and removed water-spots!
It wasn’t NECESSARY … and probably not even the property inspector would notice all these details.
But it only took an extra 2 hours and it made for a beautiful finished clean.
The property manager noticed the FINAL product and was surprised at how well a single young man could keep a home so well.

When you go to the mechanic to get your car repaired…if after doing the repair they also wash the car, you’d be vastly more delighted with the result.
Your business should be like that too…
Taking short-cuts like swiping emails and ad copy so you don’t have to come up with your own…
Well, it’s stupid.
It cheapens the final product. And you’re likely to have missed the details that made those components of another marketer’s ideas work TOGETHER because you swiped just the superficial everyone can see.
Any fool can throw up a landing page in 10 minutes. But only a real entrepreneur will spend a little extra time to ensure continuity from ad to landing page to sales offer. And it will pay off.
So “just get it going” is fine and dandy…but I believe the intention of the motto is to encourage you to take ACTION and not procrastinate with the excuse of “I want to get it perfect”.
I wish more people would take an extra hour on each task, just checking to be sure it’s logical and correct.
