I just started watching Mad Men recently.
And although I’ve only seen like 2 episodes so far, I think it’s a goldmine for marketers!
The setting is apparently in the 1960’s in an Ad Agency. As far as I’ve seen, each episode has a smart marketing revelation.
The first episode explores the advertising of Tobacco, post-Trade Commission ruling advertisers may no longer use Doctor Testimonials– they seemed to imply smoking is not unhealthy for the customer.
Its plot reminds me of a couple years ago when the Internet and Network Marketing industries were shaken apart by the FTC’s stricter policing of testimonials.

But the answer was staring them in the face all along…and yet many have not realized it.
For the duration of the first episode of Mad Men, ad man Don Draper tries to land a big tobacco account with the most limiting restriction.
While sitting at a client meeting, with no idea of what he’s going to pitch them – Draper suddenly gets an idea.
“The Trade Commission has done us a favour,” explain Draper. “Until now, we had 6 companies with the SAME product advertising it the exact same way.”
“How do you make your cigarettes?” he asks the tobacco company’s founder.
“Well, we toast it…and we roll it.”
Draper writes on his whiteboard, “It’s toasted.” He underlines the words.
“But that’s how all cigarettes are made,” retorts the founder. “They’re all toasted!”
“Yes, but now every time the competition focuses on their cigarettes not being unhealthy…they remind the public of cancer and death. But ours…ours is just TOASTED.”
This is BRILLIANT.
It’s exactly the process of thinking I had two years ago when I found that “get rich” and “make money” advertisers were being shut out from major advertising networks.
