Giving the FU-FLICK to the FTC!

I just started watching Mad Men recently.
And although I’ve only seen like 2 episodes so far, I think it’s a goldmine for marketers!
The setting is apparently in the 1960’s in an Ad Agency. As far as I’ve seen, each episode has a smart marketing revelation.
The first episode explores the advertising of Tobacco, post-Trade Commission ruling advertisers may no longer use Doctor Testimonials– they seemed to imply smoking is not unhealthy for the customer.
Its plot reminds me of a couple years ago when the Internet and Network Marketing industries were shaken apart by the FTC’s stricter policing of testimonials.
Milllion dollar Gooroo businesses went bankrupt overnight!
Google and other advertising networks killed off $10Mil/month advertisers.
But the answer was staring them in the face all along…and yet many have not realized it.
For the duration of the first episode of Mad Men, ad man Don Draper tries to land a big tobacco account with the most limiting restriction.
While sitting at a client meeting, with no idea of what he’s going to pitch them – Draper suddenly gets an idea.
“The Trade Commission has done us a favour,” explain Draper. “Until now, we had 6 companies with the SAME product advertising it the exact same way.”
“How do you make your cigarettes?” he asks the tobacco company’s founder.
“Well, we toast it…and we roll it.”
Draper writes on his whiteboard, “It’s toasted.” He underlines the words.
“But that’s how all cigarettes are made,” retorts the founder. “They’re all toasted!”
“Yes, but now every time the competition focuses on their cigarettes not being unhealthy…they remind the public of cancer and death. But ours…ours is just TOASTED.”
This is BRILLIANT.
It’s exactly the process of thinking I had two years ago when I found that “get rich” and “make money” advertisers were being shut out from major advertising networks.
I realized when people thought of “online business” they knew they wanted to have internet riches–a luxurious lifestyle of laziness and money.
There was no need for me to tell them about how much MORE money they’d make with me…
All I had to do was focus on HOW my methods would give them the answers to the inevitable next problem they have…
“How to get traffic to their websites”
“How to build their mailing lists”
“How to sell more stuff to their leads”
“How to have more fun while doing business”
“How to make their landing pages get more leads”
And how to do all this for less money, easier, and without fear.
I reframed my offers and for two years I sat all over the pages of Google’s search and display network UNTOUCHED, generating leads to my heart’s content.
Our business has evolved since – and it is far more creative than all this.
You can do the same thing too – if you can ACCEPT the new restrictions, and rather than try to get around them, instead smartly reframe your offer so its product is not “money”.
We’ve helped countless entrepreneurs make their “get rich” offers blend right in and fly under the radar without deception. Even trained professionals in this industry have no way to tell that our clients are their BIGGEST competitors…

Double Digit CTR – Part 3

Experiment 3 – Split-Testing Ads to Increase Conversion
Over the weekend, I began testing a second ad variation. The reason was that of the two running ads: Ad #1 had a click-thru-rate of 15% and Ad #2 had a click-thru-rate of 3.5%.
Additionally, Ad #1 (higher CTR) was converting at 7%, while Ad #2 (lower CTR) was converting at 17%.
I killed Ad #2. Then created a new version of it with the same body because it was most likely responsible for the high conversion rate–and replaced its headline with the headline of Ad #1 because that is the most likely cause of the Ad #1's high click-thru-rate.
